I recently made a posting regarding the Barnes Engine which was made in Newfoundland. Shortly after I received an email informing that another engine -the Coaker- was also made in Newfoundland.

If anyone has any info on the Coaker, or other engines that were made on the Island - there is a possibility that another engine was made in the Corner Brook area- please feel free to share!

David
Coaker is in my notes name only, no other info, let us know what you find on them !
-
Champion Machine and Motor Works founded in 1918 made marine engines trade name "Champion". The founders were the two sons of L.M Trask owner of the large and prominent foundry in St Johns. Champion suddenly closed in late 1919.

St Johns library is where I would start my search, please let us know what you find, Good Luck.

Concerning the Coaker Marine engine. I have a small book of short Newfoundland stories and poems. It contains a one page poem about a Coaker and the owners misadventures with said engine. It mentions it is a jump spark and evidently the water pump is run by a belt or band as they call it. It bounces around alot and backfires through the base but when it runs the owner is quite proud of it and prefers it to all make and breaks It is a 6 hp and evidently real enough to make it into Newfie folk law

In the late 1980's there was a Croker set up outside the old Fisherman's Union Premises in Port Union, Newfoundland. Its the only one I've seen and did not get a picture at the time.

I found this reference to the "COAKER" marine engines.

No sure if they were built in Newfoundland or elsewhere.
