ok as you may have read i did get my 318 going after all the help you guys had to offer but now i have a new problem it will start realy easy when it is cold and probably run all day but after you let it run for awile and it warms up you can't get it to start again to save your life it acts like it's out of time ( turns over real fast then binds up ) i have check the timing 10 times so i know it's not that. the only thing I can even remotly come up wit is that when i put the intake gasket on i was not sure witch way it went there where block off holes in it and i put it on to corispond with the block off holes on the intake im not sure if that was right or wrong ? so any help would be great thanks again

The binding sounds bad, But it could be more than one thing happing at the same time, Hot start problems could be vapor lock issues. Check your fuel line routing, Next if the carburetor is leaking after shut down it would be flooded at restart time, Try looking down the carb for fuel leakage. Next I have seen both coils and condensers fail when they get hot, Feel the coil, is it hot after running for a while. If so check the ign resister. Most coils are six volt, even in a 12 volt system. I would be interested in seeing the compression in each cylinder after you have run it for awhile. Last, How is the oil pressure??????????

i have look at the carb it is not leaking but it almost sounds like a vaperlock when it binds up the coil gets a little to hot for me but only after cranking the hell out of it not when it's running, the ignition resistor is new and it is getting a bit hot as well durring cranking, some times you will hear a loud BANG almost like you broke a rod off while cranking but it only does it one time, after the motor starts it sounds great no funny noise at all ? i will recheck the compression today the oil pressure is the same as the other motor 20-40 psi so that should be good and the motor is not smoking at all let me get the compression and ill get back to you. ( what about the intake do you know if i did that right ? )

I do not know about the intake manifold and gasket, I would have to have seen it at the time you put it together.
The banging could be raw fuel lighting off in the exhaust system (see flooding) Did you put a kit in the carburetor?

I had this problem with one of my engines (Hemi 354 M45SP3) - I never could resolve it until I switched to Pertronix electronic ignitions from the old Mallory dual points. Starts every time now, hot, cold, or in between.

Hot starting problems can occur if the engine is really hot, ie raw water pump impeller defective,or raw water intake blocked.
