Richard and I were talking recently and he mentioned that ad pictures weren't always reliable for dating engines, pictures were expensive and some manufacturers just ran the old pictures with new specifications. The 6hp L-A in the picture looks older to me, it doesn't have a plate behind the valve cage. The earliest had a wide manifold with valves on each cylinder, I think the design pictured was introduced by 1912, a few years later the ones with the plate came out.
