I noticed waster squirting out of my exhaust tubing on my last outing. I figured replacing the tubing would fix the problem (yea right). So down to the local marine store I went. I do not have very much experience with engine's, but it doesn't look like rocket science. I have a 1985 Skipjack 20' with a Volvo Penta V8. The boat was in the water for over 10 years and I put it on a trailer two years ago. The mechanic told me in order to replace the tubing, that I need to remove the riser and then replace the gasket before re-assembly. Seemed pretty simple, so he sold me the parts and off I went to experience my first lessons in boat disassembly. I was off to a good start when the bolts came out with no problems. They did look pretty rusted and didn't appear like they wanted to be re-used.
The riser was locked down pretty tight. You could tell it had been a long time since it had been removed and took some elbow grease to dislodge it. The riser was completely corroded and the surface seal on the riser and the manifold had some internal corrosion. It didn't look to me that this was unusual for a boat that sat in salt water for 18 years. Has anyone had experience with this? I have come to the conclusion that I need to purchase a new riser/gasket and bolts (the gasket the marine store sold me was the wrong size). I'm hoping I don't have to replace the manifold as well. I figure if I have a problem with the port riser, the starboard one has the same issue and should also be replaced. Should I replace both at the same time, or if it works, don't fix it. The other problem is. Where the riser exhaust tubing connected to the outlet has corroded so bad, that a large chunk of metal is missing. This is where the actual leak was coming from. It appears there was not enough metal for the hose clamps to squeeze the exaust hose on to. I can't see where this piece (sorry don't know what you call it) connects to my outdrive and it looks like it would be a real problem to remove and replace. Does anyone know where I can buy parts locally in the San Fernando Valley?
Are there other issues to look out for?
