A friend has TWO Lycoming V-12 gas engines. He believes these were designed as marine units, primarily because the exhaust is out the Vee, with no external manifold, and an exhaust water jacket. They were paired with DC generators and put in a LOCOMOTIVE, of all places.

He thinks they are circa 1938-9, and about 1080ci. Dual Stromberg carbs, distributor ignition.

If anyone can provide further info on these, or is interested in perhaps acquiring them for a marine restoration, please post a response here. Include contact info, and I'll pass it on to him.

(sorry, can't post email address due to spammers!)

There was a model UF Lycoming
  • 12 cylinder
  • 4-3/4 x 4-3/4
  • 1010 cubic inch displacement

I have further specs if you think that is it.

Regards,
Andrew

Thanks for the info so far! The UF sounds like a good candidate. Do you know of any identifying characteristics? I know it is overhead cam with multiple-roller chain drive.

Another friend suggested this was probably an aircraft engine which Lycoming adapted to any possible use they could sell them to after Rolls Royce clobbered them with the Merlin engine. Anyone know if that is reasonable?

Yep, they were made at Lycoming (now Textron-
Lycoming) in Williamsport, PA. I am retired from
there. Looks like you are getting some info on
them. Are they still available to be had? Might
be interested, but I don't have a million bucks.
Hope that doesn't leave me out. If you look on
eBay Motors you will find a site for them under
engines and or marine engines. I gotta go. I've
already answered three messages tonite.Their
site has a whole list of old engines (with
photos) that we made. Including the largest
radial aircraft engine ever made. 36 cyl. with
over 7000 cu.in.and 5000 HP. Originally made for
the B36, but never used. Look it up. OK, see you
guys. Dick Clark

Anyone ever come across information on a Lycoming V-12 (either 391 or 491) cid AUTOMOTIVE engine, converted to marine application? Would be single ignition.
