Hello folks,
First time poster here.
I just bought what appears to be about a 1958 - 1962 283 (?)Chevy marine engine. It supposedly came out of a 30' wood Owens Flagship boat.It has all the marine ammenities with it including shaft and prop.
It has an early Carter 4 barrel, Delco Remy dual point distributor, what appears to be "baby" double hump heads, cast iron oil pan and the valve train and crank look good.
It also has Flagship castings all over it. I have pictures I can send you of the motor still together. The exhaust manifolds and trany are still on it.
I checked the block numbers and it did not come out of a car. Can anyone tell me what I got and if it would be worth anything? Other than just a good small block Chevy? (I love 283's.)
I am considering selling off all the marine ammenities and maybe use the engine in one of my Hotrods but, if it is something that is better left alone and the whole thing sold to someone trying to restore a boat like it came out of, I'd like to see that happen also.
Any help is greatly appreciated!! By the way, my email is [email protected] in case you would like to write to me. The pix I have are at http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g279/Skulptor/Marine%20Motor/
Thanx for your time. Hopefully I have something that someone can really use!!
Regards,
Chaz

From the pictures and what you have stated it looks like you already know what it is, a Flagship 283 small block, 185 horse with low compression heads. It could be left hand rotation and if it is then the crank and cam would be different. If you are going to sell the motor I would keep it complete, just my opinion though.

Thanx for the post C.M.E. I don't know all that much about it. As a matter of fact, I didn't know it could be a left hand rotation. That is interesting. (The trany is on what I would call the front of the motor) And for in a car, that would kinda shoot it down.

I also did not know the heads were low compression. Actually, I was thinking/hoping that the markings would be of a head that was the predecessor of the big valve heads known as "double humps". And in turn they would also be more of a performance head. Dang....guess not.

I appreciate your opinion as well as the post!! I guess I need to find out which rotation it is to see if I want to even mess with it as a car motor. Would you have an easy way how to tell??

It doesn't look like to me, at least now, that it is "all that". So if I can use it for in a car I may keep it and sell off the marine stuff. otherwise I guess I'll see what someone is interested in giving for it as a marine motor
Thanx again for your time!
Chaz

Check the firing order stamped on the intake manifold. It will be backwards if it is reverse rotation. Or you can remove the starter and spin the bendix drive gear out then just reverse the rotation in your head and that will give you the rotation.

It looks like you wont be able to use the crank from that engine in a car because the snout is drilled to feed the trans with oil.
Hope this helps

these are just my opinions

Sorry larry, not sure there. Maybe point float. (??) Or lack of fuel.
Is your motor reverse rotation? My manifold casting is correct for a car. (81436572)
I still haven't opened mine up yet but am still considering rebuilding it for a car (1956 Chevy). Any suggetsions on where I could find people interested in the marine stuff that is attached? I even have the shaft and prop.
Good luck,
Chaz
