This beast is make and break. I wouldn't think that would be the ignition system of choice in 1908 but it must have been competive.

This was the engine made by Clinton Crane's brother for use in the Dixies. Make and break was chosen, according to Crane's "Yachting Memories", to avoid the reliability problems of the day's high-tension systems, and was inspired by a similar system used by Mercedes. The engines were notably reliable.
