Hi!
New to this website! I'm looking for information/photos of Sterling Admiral MTB Engines. I'm researching Polish MTBs in WW2 and the six MTBs built by J.Samuel White's (Cowes,IOW,UK) in 1944. (MTBs S-5 to S-10). I do have some photos/illustrations/info but cannot find out if these engines were 'V' or 'in-line'. (Think they were in-line; how many cylinders?). I've spoken to 2 Polish MTB Skippers (still alive in their 80s!) who said they were formidable engines; very powerful and very thirsty, but they were not engineers! Any info would be great. Seems like White's, the builders favoured these engines, when they couldn't get Isotta-Fraschini's from Italy and the supply of Merlins's dried up.

Hi Torpedonut
From my understanding...
Initial boats were designated MGBs from JSW and also BPBCo, with a selection of engines :-
S1 MGB JSW 3x Issota-Frascini (re-engined later to 2x Power-Packard V12)
S2~S3 MGB BPBCo 2x Power-Merlin (or possibly 2x Power-Lion (Napier W12))
S4 MGB BPBCo 3x Power-Packard V12
S5~S10 MTB JSW 3x Sterling (probably V12)

This is a 1930 ad for the "VIMALERT" engine
that was the original design for the Sterling Admiral .

Vimalert was a rebuilder of Liberty V12s. Was the Admiral design a rejigged Liberty? Odd that Sterling would build upon an outdated design.

Sterling designs were always original. The Admiral, like a lot of Sterling engines was over designed and a beautiful thing! No resemblance to a Liberty of any companies conversion.
