1909 Emerson Marine Eng.

Hey Tom, you mentioned the Dunn II spitting a little oil out of the crankcase what must they have done with this one ??
Maybe a dedicated bilge pump just for oil ??

I just received info from the Clayton Museum on my Emerson. They sent me copies of a catalogue that states the sale price was $2000. Can you believe that in the 1910/1913 era?

Keith
What did info from Clayton say about this eng?
I've searched a lot of old info and haven't been able to find any reference to it.
Maybe take off an inspection cover and look inside
they may have gold plated it??

They have a 1913 catalogue. This is one of the line drawings.

Now lets see if I have this straight. 1500 pounds, 4 cylinder, 8" bore, 7" stroke, 60 hp and $1800.00. Now thats some Barbor. That's $30 per hp. That makes the Emerson cheap at $16 per hp.

I guess Power Yachting has always required deep pockets.
How's this 1912 Van Blerck look ?
Drove up to central Florida to take these photos the other day. shot down through opened hatches.
Photo 1 shows cast bronze crankcase, wonder what the tariff on one of these was ??

An anecdote.

The St. Lawrence Engine Company Ltd (Brockville) purchased a number of 4 stroke auto and marine engines to see what thye could adapt and sell as part of their boat and motor packages. They tried a Fay and Bowen, a Ford Model A and even hired an McGill engineering grad to design their own four stroke. Eventualy they went with the marinzed Ford model A (StL built the reverse gear and the water pumps). Early on, about 1910-11 they purchased an open base six cylinder high speed Emerson possibly to test it, however this ws more for StL owner Harry Going, to put in his raceboat. The shop staff tested this thing by mounting it on the back of a light truck and attaching an aircraft propellor and using this to drive the truck through the streets of Brockville. The engine was in the shop until it was sold in the early 1960's and was last seen in small town near Ottawa in the late 1960's, owned by one of the shop's retied machinists. Alas the trail went cold after that.

Richard,
Looks like mine, except I need to make or find an original water pump. The one I have also has a ring gear and starter motor. Does anyone know when they started putting starter motors on marine engines. I would expect this would be a very difficult motor to start by hand

The 1911-12 Van Blerck above has an original starter on it, looks to be very similar design.
reminds me of old fords with the long shaft and bendix drive ? i'll look for info on early elec starters !
