I have recently acquired a sterling dolphin 8 cyl that, I was told ran a generator. The engine is very complete, having spent its life inside a building (it is now outside covered with a tarp) and would probably be easy to start and run, The engine has a brass crankcase, brass carbs, brass water pump, brass oil filter housing, etc. This engine appears to have had an easy life.
The question is this, what is this grand old engine worth? Since I mainly collect old stationary engines (primarily single cyl) I might part with the sterling.

Quite a rare find! I have a 1926 catalog that shows what I believe to be that model as:
  • Dolphin
  • 8 cylinder
  • 5-3/4 x 6-3/4
  • 1250-1550 RPM
  • 250-300 HP
  • 3250 lbs Net weight
  • Bronze and Iron Crankcase
  • Price (in 1926) $4840 wow...

Is anyone interested in new parts for Sterling Dolphin or Viking engines. Phillips Pipe Line bought the Sterling Engine company complete in the 1960's. We are still using the Viking engines today on several of our pipelines. We are planning to "Clean-up" our warehouse this year. It is full of OEM parts for Dolphin engines. We also have all OEM drawings back to 1911 for Sterling engines.

Question, about the 8 cylinder stering engine. Is it 2 parallel 4-'s. It looks like it had 2 cams, 1 for each bank, and it probably a flathead.

This Dolphin Sterling model is a true 8 cyl. They were available in 4,6 &8 cyl.The opposite side cams ran intake and exhaust valves. Some were 4 valves per cyl (Two intake and two exhaust)using forked rocker arms off one (rollar tipped )push rod. Valves in these engines were in the removeable heads, one head for each bank of two cyl. There were three plugs per cylinder and worked on a Triple/ Double combination of mag and battery. The intake side plugs fired on battery for start and a mag battery switch flipped to all mag ignition when it caught. A complete replacement cylinder head for this engine in 1926 cost $175. I know of one available in Buffalo NY for few $$ if interested.

This engine looks like a GRC 8 shown in the Commercial Type Sterling engine book I have. My great Grandfather worked for the company as a Machinest. I currently live in Oklahoma City. Do you still have this engine ?

Jack - I have a 1926 price & parts catalog for the 4,6,& 8 cyl. Dolphin engines. There are some line drawings of elevation and cross section views of the engines and pages of tabulations of parts. I did not see any info on the firing order. It is dated 1 January 1926.

Ping me or call 518.895.8954 if you want a copy.

Jack,

Keep an eye on EBAY for manuals for the GR series of Sterling Engines. There are several variants, each adding a last letter to "GR". But these manuals do surface occasionally and will give you the info you are looking for.

I will take a look in my files and see what I might have.

Cheers,

Lew

Hi Lew, I have 2 sterling engines in Newark, NJ - they actually are used to move a lift bridge (draw bridge) in case of electrical failure. I work for Amtrak.

Amtrak is looking to pay for restoration work on these engines - can you help me? Thoughts?

Joel, I'm a big Sterling engine fan. I've owned and ran a big Sterling Petrel in a 32 ft Albany boat company runabout for a number of years-now in the Clayton NY Antique Boat Museum collection. The original engine in the boat was a huge 1100 cubic inch Sterling Dolphin marine engine.
Thanks to Dan Acierno in Sayville NY. the Sterling Petrel performed like a Swiss watch.
No one else I know or can think of has as much experience or expertise on making Sterling engines run well as Dan Acierno.
You can contact Dan at 631 793 2913 in the NYC area

Did anyone ever follow up on this posting from 2003? Were the sales records perhaps there as well?

Greetings Robert,

We have been trying to get in touch on this for years. It would be very interesting to see what drawings are available and other records. When Sterling combined with Whitcomb Locomotives after WWII and then was purchased by Baldwin Locomotive Works, many of the drawings and records went to them. They are now locked away in Sacramento at the Railroad Museum archives. And as they are not RR related, are lower priority for inventory.

The Sterling Docs need to be saved!

It would be good to know what documents and drawings are available and how large this collection actually is. If sizable, I can make suggestions as to what museums would be a good and safe location for them.

As to the parts, there are a couple people in the US that might be interested.

I can be reached at 530-263-0412 or [email protected]

Cheers,

Lew "The Left Coast Sterling Guy"
