What a great site !! I especially liked Georges story on his Atlas Imperial Tug--and I thought I was the only crazy one !!Anyway, having finally figured out CATs late model engine designations,Can anyone shed some lite on the early stuff D-399s 330s 331s 377s etc. I may make an offer on a boat with a 377 (?) and hope its not a worn out anchor. Happy Holidays !! Wild Bill-- [email protected]

Pretty confusing--no?? A pal of mine had a 1962 40 foot Cris Craft that had 333s-- 4bangers at about 140(?) horses. The boat I'm looking at has 377s--about 400 hp and yet another out east with a 397 V16(?)

Bill,

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but here is a CAT model index from 1951.

Hello There,

Regarding earlier Cat's, all I can remember up on the power range were the big 16cyl D399's, Somewhat smaller in cylinder numbers was the 12cyl D379 and the Em.Set as we used call it,the D377. Exact HP I cannot remember offhand but could have a look here if required. All of these were big sets with only the D379's and D377's air cooled by a pretty hefty 3 phase fan. Brings back memories of starting these boys in adverse conditions.

Pat.

Never worked on a d377 that I can remimber, looked through the same cart shown above and found it on page 54. looks like it was built from 1957- 1968. Will check to see if I can find something on it. does not even show up in the old cat volume one book. like to know the bore size and stroke, And number of cylinders, please.

Looked throught the old books and found a D375 engine, which is a vee 8. serial number 18b. This is probably the same stlye engine you are talking about, but yours would be a 12 cylinder. Does it have a blower that is gear drive off the back of the engine? If so I have worked on just one!!! It was a generator model.

Think we are talking about the same engine here ok. 8 cylinder is a better picture than mine and this one was also an em. gen set. Blower wise I think was the same also so I reackon we were on the same track. Pity the old memory cannot remember more details about it, but after working on different engines all shapes and sizes, facts and figures just enter the head while working on it and out again when all up and running.
Best of luck anyway!

Pat.

That is the only engine that I think it could be, the front gear train had horizontal and vertical shafts and gears. when you wanted to pull the injection pump group, you unbolted the rear gear housing and lifted the blower, injection pump and all off the engine. To time the injection pump you had to pull the fuel filter housing off the front of the injection pump grp. and install a timing degree plate. Took for ever to get the parts for the engine, and that was over 20 so years ago.
So it might be hard to find parts now for it, might have to make most of the gaskets.

one other thing the rod and pistons had to be pulled out the bottom, because the rod cap end was to big to pull out threw the liner.
