Alfred,
I think Capt is refering to lack of a turbo. You are correct all 2 stroke Detroits have a roots blower to scavage the exhaust and push in a fresh charge of air. However it is possible to have a turbo in front of the roots blower.

I have aquired a 4 cyl detroit with an irrigation pump on the farm. I work for Caterpillar but do not have two stroke experience. I dont know how to tell if it is a 53 or 71 model. Two of the injectors stuck after the first attemp to start. I would like to replace them and get this unit running, possible for antique engine shows. Can injectors be changed with out special tooling? If not, is this tooling expensive. I have lots of tools, access to even more, just no one around with two stroke detriot knowledge. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Injectors are easy to change no special tools needed as long as you replace with the same number injector. Be sure to get the injector rack ajustment back in the same place and all of them the same. I have freed up many injectors myself without going to a professional. A 53 series engine will have 2 pullys that turn on the front top of the engine. A 71 series will have one pully on the rear top of the engine. Most of the 53 series will have a casting marks CWC on most all of the castings. Trying to type an explanition of the procedure for removeing injectors would ba challenge for me.

I am consindering a 2-53 for a boat I have built. I will need to control RPM's with a throttle, but have been told this can't be done with a 2-53. The mechanic telling me this says 2-53's govs. are all for constant speed usage(light plants, pumps, etc) and the 2-53 cant be used as a variable speed unit.

I don't think that is accurate because there was at least one application in a 1950's John Deere tractor that was a variable speed unit.

The 2-53 is used mostly for the light plants and industrial pump units, with PTO's,..but I do show that a Varible Speed governor, open linkage is available, being the same as the 3-53 and it depends on which side of the engine it is. I reccomend that you contact your local Detroit Diesel Dealer/Distributor, that can help you on this and they should be in the Yellow Pages.
The 2-53 only has a 2/Valve Head, verses the 3 & 4-53 having a 4/Valve Head, being better for a constant load Marine Engine, but your 2-53 Should work also. Good Luck!

Howdie, I have H.P. ratings for you all with 2-53's - with "35" injectors the H.P. is 34 @ 1800 & 36 @ 2000 RPM'S - Valve lash .011 inch cold -
Injector torque 25 foot lb.
Unfortunatly thats about all the info I got, because our 2-53 repair manual has grown legs.

I have a 2-53 on board for light plant and air compressor. The unit was completely rebuilt by P.O. and then sat for quite a while. I went to start it, fired right up but then wanted to run away. Had to cover intake to kill it. Man it was screaming! I suspect one of the fuel racks is hanging up. Wondering if any of you experts had had this occur and if it is common and easily cured?

Had a pair of 12V92s in boat - two blowers and two turbochargers each engine - one engine would not start traced to a stuck shut injector holding all others down. Then very inky exhaust during acceleration cured by DD speeding up gear ratio to blowers. HP proved on dyno.

(Boat eventually scrapped by the next owner when crew forgot to unmute low oil pressure alarms. Oil line to one turbo ruptured --> all oil was pumped around the engine room --> destroyed engine.)

One of your injectors or both are probably siezed from sitting for a long time, or water contamination....Remove your Valve cover and check the fuel racks on your injectors, to see if they move freely, or probably stuck in the full fuel position,..causing your 2-53 to run away, stuck in the full fuel position. You may be able to free the racks, but will probably have to remove the injectors and replace/repair them. Be sure and replace your fuel filters, to get rid of the water in the fuel...the injector tips do not like water and the injector tips will blow out.

There is a speed control rack under the valve cover, its the shaft or pipe that runs along one side.Tighten a vicegrips on it and try wiggleing it around.Sometimes they will loosen with some manuel encouragement. It needs to be able to move when you move your throttle. If it wont move you will have to remove the ijectors and soak them in diesel fuel. Then useing a plactic or rubber hammer try tapping the meter shafts in and out untill free. This is a common problem if an engine sits without use.

One more thing its best to wiggle the rack with a vicegrip before you start one.

I think you might get additional advice from this group on SmokeStack

https://www.smokstak.com/forum/forums/detroit-diesel-two-stroke.264/

That group is dedicated to the Detroit Diesel engine.
