Hello, I've just got a Petter single cylinder diesel model AB1W to go into my traditional Scottish 18ft bata. The engine model plate looks original and states model number AB1W. I was sold (on ebay) the engine as an aircooled engine, but the manual I've downloaded talks about the water cooling, especially draining the cylinders by removing the plugs. I can't see any evidence of drain plugs or water pump on the engine however! In fact the cylinder has fins for air cooling.

Does anyone know if this model was made available as an aircooled engine?

Thanks

Hi! I know that this is a late reply but here goes. The Petter AC1M marine engine can be either air cooled or water cooled. There is a lot to be said for air cooling as the engine cannot freeze and leaks and corrosion are not a problem. Air cooling is grand for an open workboat. Yachties like to have the engine buried below the cockpit floor however and they prefer water cooling hence the AC1WM but water cooling causes a lot of problems. Petter advise using cooling water tanks, alternatively raw-water can be pumped through the engine. This is OK in lakes and rivers but not really OK in seawater. Westerbekes version of this engine used a heat exchanger and two waterpumps. This way seawater doesn't corrode the alloy head (which is the engines Achilles heel) Alloy heads weakened by 30 years of salt corrosion seem to cause blown head gaskets on a regular basis and allegedly the gaskets were rather iffy even when the engines were new. The alloy head on an iron cylinder barrel is not really a good idea but some gaskets were allegedly graphite loaded in an attempt to let the head slide over the gasket without ripping it. (alloy expands about 1.7 times faster than iron) If perchance one wishes to install an air cooled engine in a yacht it is still possible. All that is really needed is an electric fan and ducting to take the hot air away and there are some Chinese made bargains on the market costing a tenth of the price of a true marine engine. The Petter AB1WM engine is slightly less horsepower than its AC1 variants and has a different gearbox. The engine layout is different too. Allegedly, but it is only a rumour, some AB1WMs had an iron cylinder head - less susceptible to corrosion and very highly sought after if they actually exist! Never use gasket cement on these head gaskets as this just makes the problem worse. Early Victor Reinz gaskets were thinner than later types so with the 60 thou gaskets now available the bumping clearance may need adjusting. If only someone would manufacture some iron heads the problem would be solved. An alternative engine the Yanmar IGM10 is taller by one and a half inches and costs $s$s$s. The alternative that will fit is the Farymann Yellow River but again one is looking at £2500 and one would never recoup the outlay when the boat was sold. Good Luck and happy boating!

Anybody know what the throughput volume of the water pump on the Petter AC1WM 6.6 hp marine diesel is?

Hi
I have just bought a 40ft narrow boat with a Lister Petter PH2 15hp marine diesel. Can anyone advise if I have a problem with the clutch..It drives in forward o.k. (I think !not had one before)when in neutral the prop still turns slowly but reverse is very very poor.Is this normal for this old engine or is there a fault.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Regards Alan.
