A friends yacht fitted with a RC16D would not start -after being 'serviced' in a Spanish boat yard. Have fitted new fuel lines fuel pump and filters and bled the system to the injectors but still it will not start-even with spraying 'easy start' into the inlet!
suspect cylinder head gasket as start cranking appears slow until you block the inlet on the f,wd cylinder inlet when it mysteriously speeds up to a 'normal' turn over-any ideas?

Hi Rudolph,
As a Marine Engineer your comments interest me, I like problems :-) I would check the valve timing and the injection timing because from what you have said about restricting the air intake and the engine turns over faster would suggest it might be compressing when it should not? also before ripping the head off, check the valve clearances and do a compression check on all cylinders, this will show up any loss of compression caused by faulty valves or gaskets,
I take it the engine was running ok before the service? This is the best I can offer with the information you have given me.
one question I have if the engine was not runnung before the service? has this engine been stood down for a long time???
Regards Keith

Hi keith
Thanks for the prompt reply-I am also a 'Artificer ' in the Royal Navy but am used to slightly larger and more complex machinery (not necessarily more challenging tho')-The engine in question has been unused for approx2-3 years and the report I had was that it was running on initial test in ahead gear (time unknown)-then stopped and was unable to be restarted. Spanish 'engineers' were tasked (as boat was in Barcelona) to carry out remedial work, namely ripping off my friend for work not needed or carried out. I have since renewed fuel pump/filter and proved fuel supply to injector union. From here it becomes strange-'easy start' was administered to no avail although fumes from valve overlap can be seen in each inlet tract. On covering forward cylinder inlet the engine crank speed would noticeably increase and the engine attempt to fire on the after pot. On removing my palm(obstruction) engine crank slows down and runs battery down due to not starting. My guess as timing has not altered or valve clearances altered(I checked operation of rocker gear) and injection timing has not been touched that there is a loss of compression affecting one (or both) cylinders which is preventing the compression ignition cycle. What are your views.

Thanks
Randolph57

Hi Ruolph
mmm well to start with I did not like that word you used (guess):-)
the engine turning over faster with you hand over one air inlet makes sence because you are making the compression just about negitive on that cylinder so less load, if you are sure (no gusses please) about the injection and the compression and the timing and the valve clearances, I am going to take a flyer, remove the injectors and squirt about eight pumps from an oil can in to the bores on both cylinders then turn over three or four times, replace the injectors and go for a start, I am assuming the engine has either stood for a long time or has worn bores and rings the oil will form a seal for the rings and bore and lift the compression, use a full battery and cold start on the pump if it has one, you will be left with two conclusions one if it does not start, you have missed something and two if it does it is worn on the bores and rings, but this can happen on engines which are in quite good nick but have been standing for a long time,
I was Merchant Marine but moved to the private sector as Forman for JG Meaks (boatbuilders and suppliers of Marine engines and gearboxes) folowed by the Environment Agency for many years, I retired early and just enjoy my own boat, Motorbikes and helping others from time to time now :-)
Hope this works let me know please
Regards Keith
