Hello there!
I wondered if anybody here could help me. I have a Renault Marine Couach RC28d with a (renault) AS16 reverse gear gearbox. My problem is that the clutch cones inside the gearbox are slipping - it sometimes takes a few attempts to get any forward motion. When I do get forward motion it is often a bit on the intermittent side. I wondered if anybody had either a: a spare as16 gearbox; b: cone clutches for the gearbox or c; are there any compatable cone clutches from other manufacturers for this box? d; all else failing, are thre any other gearboxes that would fit - the ratio is 2.05 to 1.
RC28d parts are a little hard to find!!!
I have spent ages playing around with the selector lever adjustments with mixed results. Any help or pointers would be very gratefully recieved.
I'm in England.
Many thanks, ollie

Hello Ollie,

I have an RC16D and the only place so far I found that sells original spare parts is http://www.renaultcouach.com/. Check if they can help you. I believe they are in England.

I had the same problem with my gearbox a couple of years ago and found that no amount of "fiddleing" made any difference. Replacing the cone is the only solution. There are a number of differernt sized thrust washers that MUST all go back in the same way otherwise the box will bind when it heats up. I had my box out 3 times untill I realised the mistake. In some cases the difference is only a couple of thou.

Hi!!!!!
I'm sorry to have taken so long to reply - Hotmail is very temperamental when used on my mobile!! In fact it barely works at all. Very frustrating. Please please please could you send me your manual and parts catalogue? Do you need my home address or my e.mail address?
P.s. How much would a set of gearbox cones cost me?

hello.... At the time renault marine was still in the usa(fort lauderdale) I was the national service manager for the marine group. the gear box you refer to was late in the program before the french goverment shut our opertion down. The similar gear box was used on smaller motors as well as the 28/30 hp two cylinder "couach" motor. the condition you have was a bit typical and is caused by loose condtion of the cone assy on the shaft. IE ware . to correct this condition replacment of the parts can correct it. adjustment of the shift head will help but if not done correctlly , abnormanl ware on the shift block will ocure. the normal adjustment was to seat the cone and then back off the screw 1/10 of a turn(very little) the allen set screw is on the underside of the shiter head.there is a screw for each direction(f+R). when renault marine was in restructuring (NANNI DIESEL) took over the production plant in Marsaprime france. you can find them on the net.
I rebuild so many of those box .....ugg...

scott again.... most of the 28/30 motors had a borg warner hydrolic gear. even though it was larger in size it was a better aplication... try to find a flange housing and convert to a borg gear.
