I imagine that there must be a way to look up a serial number and find out what year it was made. My gm 671 was built in 41, (I didn't know about this post until I got home from the boat)but if I could look at the serial number on my engine and compare it we might know a little more about this subject. My boat was an old WWII Navy boat built at the Bremerton Naval shipyard in 1941 and the gm 671 is the original engine the boat came with. I belive the engine would have to have had a "High Head" conversion however somewhere along the line because when the 671's started out in the early days I was told they had to be started with eather which is not realy something you want to have to do because you can hole a piston and it is very bad for the life of the engine. When the head conversion came along this solved that problem. My engine starts right up so I imagine it would have to have had this done. When you mention Grey Marine I think of the very earliest 671's evre built. Of course everyone knows that if you start a diesel engine with eather long enough, perty soon you will always have to start it with eather and then it will be called an "Eather Bunny". Does your Grey Marine 671 have a Synchronized Gear Pump for it's raw water pump?

Water in the air box usually means a crack above it. The weakest place is just inside the blower. The head gasket is made of indiviual parts unless you have a very old one. If you have a small notch near the front between the head and block you have the new head gasket. I can make a guess as to when it was made by looking at the differant changes made over the years. If you have the old head gasket you will have to get one custom made. Most truck parts places used to have the new style gasket.
