I have a 1958 Mercedes OM 315 6 cylinder 120 hp
diesel in a 1960 steel John Alden 60 ft ketch
sailboat. Is anyone familar with these engines?
They were put in trucks in the 1950's. There is
a guy on youtube starting one. Mine is in good
shape with 9100 hours. I am told they were used
a lot for gensets and many of these motors went
to the Middle east Arab countries. Any information will be greatly appreciated. It
seems like a wonderful engine. [email protected]

Presumably your engine has been overhauled at least once? Looks like this? http://cdn.clasipar.com/pictures/photos/004/051/109/vga_DSC00611.JPG

They seem to have a very good reputation.

The boat sounds interesting too.

Mercedes has definitely marketed the same vehicles and engines very differently and with very different prices, depending on the target country.

You might want to get some secondary filtration such as a Spinner II centrifuge. The engine oil is probably very dirty looking all the time?

Robert,
To my knowledge the engine in my boat has never been overhauled. Presently there is no need for overhauling it as it runs starts good runs good, uses no oil and has every indication of doing so for a long time. It does need a new ring gear attached which I have purchased and a rear main seal which weeps just a bit of oil. Where is the
OM315 engine in the picture? Is it presently
in use. I have the original invoice of the engine
in the boat and pictures of it being delivered. These engines were used in post WW2 trucks. I
think the L6600 may have been one of them. Any
further information, including where to find parts
would be appreciated. [email protected]

I also have an OM315 Engine in my boat. I need a new Exhaust Manifold. Can you recommend a starting place for me to start searching for one. My web queries have not yielded anything so far.
