I wonder how big your muscles would have to be to get that engine to fire. Just overcomming the friction would be a challenge to mere mortals.

What a lovely old thing: Does she run I wonder. It is a little sad to see engines as static exhibits and would be nice to build a boat round that one.
Better I guess to be on display than knackered.

If you're ever in Port Dover Ontario it sounds like there is another one to see there. See www.scrutonmarine.com
"File WT2015: Many thanks to Captain William Alexander. His donation of an antique 3 cylinder Kahlenberg marine diesel engine is a wonderful addition to our Port Dover Harbour Museum."

Robert,

I looked at the scruton site but couldn't find WT2015 http://www.scrutonmarine.com/

Can you find it again and copy the address (URL) of the specific page and post it here?

Thanks.

Greg were you the chap with the working Kahlenberg
in a trailer at the Mystic Antique Marine engine show back in 1992 or 1993? That was a magnificent display.

The Kahlenberg in question (on a stand) is owned
by a guy in Two Rivers, Wisconsin and was developed by his late father-in-law. So far as my tug; I'm trying to relocate her from Milwaukee to
Superior, Wisconsin but with little sucess. Meanwhile I'm in contact with the factory at T.R. and working up a list of exsisting Kahlenberg engines, running, abandoned or in Museums. If you have informtion please send a message. Thanks, Greg

Robert,
Are you sure it is a gas engine? I have a catalog that shows the smallest model as 20-24HP 2 cylinder.... but is diesel or "Oil Engine" as they call it.

2nd hand account of a derelict I have not seen. Presume it must be the engine you refer to. May I ask you to post or post me a scan/photo of that 20-24hp, if you have the time? Thanks.

I think Kahlenberg built some gas engines right after an early period with steam. There may be an example at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum @ Manitowoc. I'll try and check and get back to you.

Hi. Newcomers here.
My wife & I are looking at buying a tug with a E-6, 750 hp in it. It is supposedly running now.
Thought it prudent to learn as much as possible about Kahlenbergs and this model in particular. Any help is appreciated, thanks. Ted

There is a Kahlenberg engine room telegraph (the one for the wheelhouse) on that famous auction site right now.

Just the thing to go with your big oil engine.

Nothing to do with me of course.

In viewing some of the other sections of the site I was thrilled to run across a thread for Kahlenbergs! To answer someones previous question, yes they did make gas ones, I brought one home awhile ago, but it has had a hard life, the brass tag has a serial #199 Z and HP of 3- 5 (or possibly it is an S). It would be great if anyone had any info they could share about the engine, particularily on the trip mechanism for the ignitor - which is unfortunately missing pieces. Also the top of the piston is gone and has had someones revisions added to it. It would appear the original baffle would have been bolted to the top of the piston. Kahlenberg engines are very scarce for my area, can anyone tell me what sizes they came in and if this one is a large or small size?

I was going to post a chart showing engine sizes etc. that was kindly contributed by someone on another site, but unfortunately it is larger than 100Kb and cannot be made smaller and still be legible. I'll send that to you by email if possible.

I'll also send you an address at Kahlenberg Bros. They can provide you with a copy of the original sales info for your engine, the date of completion etc.

In regard to parts, there are illustrations that may help. Kahlenberg Bros. also retains many of their plans and drawings I am told.

They are a very helpful "old school", family owned company.

Phil, I think these pictures should give you a pretty good idea what the ignitor trip looks like. I can't see the back of your engine, but there appears to be a post below the ignitor which should act the same as this double. These pictures are from the Muskoka Pioneer Power show at Bracebridge, ON (engine owned by the club).
Hope that helps, Blair.

Hi All, thanks for the response. Blair and Robert, thanks for the pics - they show alot of the details I was looking for. My engine is not very accessable at this time so I can't see where the water pump would have been mounted. Does anyone maybe have a close up shot of this area and the hook up between the excentric and the pump? I am assuming the lever on the back end was for a reversing propellor? I am wondering what carb was used on Kahlenbergs?

That's all I've got, but someone else might be able to help...

As for the carbs, the larger engines seem to have used a unique-looking mixer valve that almost looks like it was built on the body of large right angle globe valve...anyone?

This engine was sold in 1905 and installed in a picknic launch.Factory overhaul 1912,in witch it was bored 1/32. It is an excellent runner

Thanks for posting! Any chance of some close up photos John? The mixer valve I don't recognize and there seem to be a few attachment points on the cylinder with nothing attached - is anything missing? With that long keyed shaft do you think it had a factory reverse gear originally?

Robert,
Looks like John's engine has could have been converted to sparkplug when the factory rebuilt the engine. There is a plate over the area where the ignitor mounted, and a tapped boss for the rocker.

I wondered about that Keith and thought probably it was the castings being set up so as to be usable for either M&B or sparkplug(?) I was thinking more of the boss on the back of the cylinder and what that might have been for. Presumably the engine is a 'hot-head'? Is this true of yours Phil?

Keith & Robert
You are correct, the plate is for the ignitor, the boss for the trip rod bracket. The trip rod lever is on the same shaft as the water pump eccentric. I have no idea what the boss with two threaded holes on the back was for. The long key on the shaft slides fore and aft. Facing the flywheel, when turning clockwise the key moves aft to a notch in the coupling, counter clockwise moves the key forward to a notch in the eccentric drive , the eccentric does not move while the key moves thus changing the timing for opposite rotation. I will try to post pics of this to help clarify the explanation. The mixer is a 3/4 luckinhimer. I am trying to obtain prints or pics of the ignitor. I would like to duplicate it. I will have the engine at Calvert in May.

Hello Everyone, I have a some answers to a few questions. Yes it is a hot head, and the ignitor is complete except for the springs. John, when the weather (and the storage facilities) are warmer I will try to get a drawing with accurate measurements posted. This engine has one screw and a broken piece of brass as all that is left of the water pump. I think the timer may have been put in at the factory during the re-build in 1912? The one picture show the head nicely and the two small pieces I think are probably the ignitor picks - can anyone confirm?

Robert/John,
I got around to taking more pictures of Dave's engine. The lever at the back of the engine is used to change the timing. It has an ignition contact to allow for the reversing of the engine. There is the No. 55 stamped on the igniter. Don't know if this would be the serial number or not. It also has a pulley behind the flywheel and what looks like some kind of mount on the cylinder which is probably related to the mount. I neglected to take any measurements, but the engine stands about 4 feet tall on its skid. I have additional pictures.

Hi All, it was great to see the picture with the carb, I am going to try to make a carb out of a 1" 90 degree valve. I have no idea what the interior looks like. My Kahlenburg info says there are 36 components to the carb, I do have a similiar looking carb on an Ellis 2 Cycle engine - I suppose I could pattern after it. Keith, you are right in that the bracket on the cylinder does have something to do with the pulley. The bracket holds an arm on which a dynamo is mounted and in turn is driven by the pulley. I am trying to move the lever on the back of my engine, but am not getting the eccentric to rotate - hopefully it just needs more lubrication.

I Thought it is time to thank Dave Deardorff and JB for their help with getting my 5 hp Kahlenberg running.

My engine was missing the ignitor and the exhaust flange. Dave was kind enough enough to lend me his to copy. I have sketches of the the parts, a pattern for the casting and the tooling to wind the spring. Anyone needing help just let me know via Pm.

JB lent me his float assembly which keeps a constant head of gas on the mixer needle. Works great.

Yesterday I was able to run the engine for 60 minutes at 220 rpm with only a occasional ignitor miss. The lever located on the rear of the engine works well for reversing, just pull the little brass trigger which breaks the ignitor circut, pull the lever back and release the trigger and the engine reverses.

I have just located the correct Wizard low tension magneto which is mounted on a pin held in the boss located on the cylinder which has a square hole in it. the magneto is driven with a flat belt and uses the pulley located just behind the flywheel.

Was the carb/vaporizer with the engine, or did you make this as well? Do you know where to obtain one of these?

The mixer is original and came with the engine. I have no idea who might have one. It would be a complicated core to make for both the top and bottom , plus the patterns for both.

I have a chart boat using a 75-90 hp Kahlenberg engine. Engine runs good but am starting to have trouble with the reverse gear/ clutch . Prop shaft is loosing rpm when engine rpm ether stay the same or increase. I have good engine schematics but not much on the clutch. If could get info in this issue would appreciate it.

Contact Kahlenberg. They may have a manual for the reverse gear. They are very receptive to providing info on particular engines.
