John,
In doing a web search on saab model G your request came up. Have you found a source for parts?... I have a 1967 32' Golden Hind sloop that has a Model G and I can find no source for parts. Even Sabb's need some maintenance.

I have a Sabb 2gz and the clutch keeps slipping and requiring tightening. Is there a part in there that may be worn out and in need of replacement?

Hi all!

I have a question... our sabb 2HG maximum rpm is 1400, but I read on some site that this type of engine should be running 2200 rpm. My question is, how much power does it deliver at 1400 rpm?

Greetings, Stefan
From the Netherlands

Try Sabb America in Leeburg Fla, or [email protected]
The british outfit has good connections as these Sabb engines are far more common in the north atlantic area than the US.
Other options:

If your engine is not starter equipped already(and many were not) you could look into a belt drive starter/generator. Many are available which would give you access to a full electric system if you do not already have a generator or alternator. Any generator rebuild shop could likely give you current options. Good luck.

When the reverse gear ceased to work on our variable pitched SABB G motor, we opened the propeller housing and found the two rear thrust rings were cracked. We subsequently purchased three new thrust rings from the UK, but now have the problem of fitting them. The stern housing that takes the rear thrust bearings seems to be cast. Does anyone know how to replace the thrust bearings?

I think what you have to do is cut the rings in one place to get them on. They should then sit there OK.

To Owen Connelly.
You will need to get in touch with Sleeman Hawken (google) for all your spares and advice. They are extremely good at giving advice and know what they're talking about.
The engine is quite basic and you will need a manual, but it isn't rocket science. A basic socket set and standard toolkit will be required, except for a few extra bits such as spring compressors, piston ring compressors and a good puller for the flywheel. Check the manual before you begin.
Good luck.

Can anyone please tell me the length and type of fanbelt needed for a Sabb 10HP single cylinder engine. I remember it is a "something 1400". Does anyone know if the "1400" bit refers to the length....

We're in seattle rebuilding a Saab model H-HG 1 cyl 8hp 1974 motor and want to know if anyone out there knows what the timing procedure is as we connect the piston and crank. We see no timing marks-anywhere.

On the Sabb 2H, the timing mark, Top Dead Center , is pounded into the flywheel with one large center punch on the surface that is perpendicular to the engine. ( For a 2 H the other TDC mark will have two center punch marks 180 degree from the first one.)
Get your sander out to find it.

In Seattle, you should go and visit Pat Disjardon, Pat’s Marine Diesel , 1080 West Ewing Pl, Seattle, WA 98119, 206-285-0184. Forget trying to call him. Call Bill and find out when Pat is likely to be in the office. I bought a Sabb 2 H engine from him, sight unseen, - very helpful and knowledgeable

Hi there everyone,
I was just looking for my pdf copies of the Sabb manuals to answer someones question about his gearbox when I found I no longer have them. I didn't make back up copies and a few months ago I had a nasty computer virus and lost lots of stuff.
Unfortunately it seem the pdf manuals included. I went back to the Sabb site but they seem to have changed it and no longer have anything to do with their old engine, Pretty tight I think.
Anyway does anyone have the pdfs that could send me copies. Kind regards Iain.

Dingoman: Can you post a photo? Stuffing boxes of any kind can be installed to engines.

Does anyone have any tips for removing a stubborn cylinder liner on a GG? I used a very robust traverse which usually works but not on this occassion.

Have a Sabb 2HG engine fitted, and we are trying to build up a list of non-SABB spare part numbers. Reason being the part supplied by SABB are expensive (e.g. oil filter is six times cost of identical from local car parts supplier). Also if we have problems when away from base it can take days/weeks to get the part from SABB.

Not suprisingly SABB (and agents) won't supply OEM numbers

Only part we are now missing is that for the Temperature Sender Unit.

Does anyone know, if not an actual part number, a vehicle that the same unit fits?

(Once that is done I will post a complete list of alternative part numbers in case anyone wants it)

I have a spare Sabb 2H that will be replacing the one on my Atkin Schooner. I will pull the temperature sending unit and see if I can find another source.

SABB used often VDO as instrument supplier and in the 2HG manual (Wiring Diagram) says "VDO electrical instruments":
Maybe this one? VDO 325-805-003-002Chttp://baykusoglu.com.tr/index2.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tp l&product_id=1868&category_id=9&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=8 since in SABB's store it says: 70-120 5/8 UNF http://nettbutikk.sabb.no/shop/productDetails.aspx?ProductId=16&catalogDirectory Id=2

Free for the asking: I have two sets of parts for the hand cranking system on Sabb 2H, 2HG, 2HSP. I would not be surprised that these also fit on the single cylinder if you shorten the hand crank shaft. ( no head room on my Atkin schooner- plus I'm too old to use the hand crank.)

Hi Hi,

I am looking for a refurbished and working SABB single cylinder diesel 'Model H' 8hp engine? Preferably in North America, but would still be interest if it can be shipped to North America. Thanks. Jess from www.YachtTeleport.com

Has anyone got a cylinder head for a Sabb 10hp Type G? Ours has cracked putting the boat we use for disabled sailing out of action.

For an owners manual in North or South America, contact the dealer- Bill Miller [email protected]
(352) 589-2882- in Florida. There is no shop manual in English. Look around the antique marine engine site- maybe search on "manual" and you will find a site that has an on line version.

I have electronic copies from this site so let me know if you cannot find them- I am not too swift in loading attachments on this site -
The clutch housing has a 4 bolt cover in front of the levers. Pull the cover and see if there is any oil. If not put in a gallon of Kroil -http://www.kanolabs.com/ let sit for a week or two. ( My reverse was seized after the boat sank in salt water and engine sat for 8 months before I got it- I never had to replace any parts)
Let us know what you see after the cover is off.

If you are very committed to the this Sabb G, then look for a spare engine in England, Sweden & Norway- Plenty of them around. You will need more than just a cylinder head. You need a source for other castings. The freight for 300 pounds will cost more than the engine.

Check this site- but most are USA based engines

The easiest thing to do is use a keel cooler and a dry exhaust. No pumping salt water at all.

Hi, SABB parts from the dealer are blue. pretty dang close to "GMC blue"

I Am In mexico and was not planning a long mechanical layover but i now badly need a cylinder head for a 2GRG 20hp.... if anyone has one for sale i could have it shipped to canada or the united states and have it brought down by a visiting friend.
Thank-you,

Margaret: Not sure that you have the correct model number " 2GRG" Suggest you surf the British dealer's web site http://www.sleeman-hawken.co.uk/files/service-and-maintanence-tips.pdf . They explain how to find the model # and Serial # ( you need both) Great site. You are unlikely to find just the used cylinder head. Talk to Sleeman- Hawken and Bill Miller ( N. & S. American dealer-352-589-2882 What other Sabb engine will take your cylinder head ? You probably will better off buying the whole engine. I paid $800 to have a 2 H shipped from Seattle to CT.- but I have already used several cast parts)

What is the problem with your cylinder head? When I was rebuilding old MD Volvos brazing/welding worked well.

Unless you are stranded in some remote anchorage you should be able to find a competent welder.

A word of warning to anyone on here looking for Saab spares. be very careful of what you buy from windy the miller as he has caught me twice with a cylinder head for my 10hp model g. the first 1 was rotten throughout and could have the valves ground as the was nothing to grind too. the second one was ment to be a reconditioned unit that when it was fitted it would have wrecked my newly recondition engine as the exhaust port had a badly welded patch that blew causing the salt water to enter the sump via the piston. I have spent over the price of a new unit from sleeman and hawken and he is refusing to give me a full refund on the second head i bought from him never mind abut the first one. this is just a friendly warning

Greetings to all from Turkey where I am with with my 85 year old sailing friend on his boat.. a 1973 Taiwanese built double ender .. a Traveller 32. We have sailed together for many years.. trouble free till bow.

We have the Sabb model G with a Variable pitch propeller arrangement.
Our problem is as follows:

The shift from forward to reverse has become very stiff.

I have removed the 4 bolts between the Flange that connects to the propeller shaft coupling ( part number G82BC ). Now , not being connected it is very easy to change from forward to reverse

I can spin the propeller shaft but not push it out or pull it in at all.

We suspect the problem is in the Propeller boss the housing holding the propeller blades that controls the pitch.

Do anyone have any exploded diagrams that might help us ( other than the ones in the green handbook ) or any advice.

Also can the Propeller Boss housing be removed while in the water.. ?

I have attached a Picture of the same motor and propeller as we have.

Many thanks for reading,
Mike.. Sailing boat BOGLE Traveller 32 ( plenty on youtube )

Greeting Traveller 32.
I sent directly 2 SABB manuals to your email address- file size ( 4-5MB), one covers the feather gear box which after I read your email you do not need and other cover prop assembly and ) reversing gear box).

Never had an internal prop problem. Have had problems with the starting PAWG, 35i , jamming up the box.

I would crack the fuel line at the injector and crank the engine to make sure air is purged. If that doesn't work, have the injector pop tested by a mechanic and if it checks out, you're down to having the injection pump checked. I'm trusting you have compression.

get a hand squeeze pump found on outboard motor gas tanks. squeeze the pump several times until it will not pump. Crack Open the the return line on top of the fuel filter ( known as the return line-it is copper not steel) let fuel flow until you get a constant flow. close. Squirt liberal amounts of WD-40 into the ciggrette glow plug hole- takes a 14mm or 17mm wrench, This bolt is maybe 2 inches below the top of the head- the inside end will hold something the OD of a cigarrette. close. starter must be cranking fast.
see above listing for the operators manual

Hand Pump.
Mount the hand pump right after the fuel line leaves the tank. you will see that fuel is pushed all the through to the injector by pass line to the top of the filter.

On the boat this pump should be located so that you can find it fast. I had my 2H engine start to fail in the middle of a water spout ( tornado) 5 miles off RI. The pump got me through until the eye of the storm passed over us and I found the leak a hose barb caused.- ( had the same problem on an oil line for my Toyota Rave 4) Use double wall heavy duty fuel line where hose barb are involved- check for cracks annually and replace maybe every 5 years.

The model G & H are principally identical, You need the manual for sabb G plus the additional manual for H & HG.
So just do a google search for Sabb G manual and another search for Sabb H manual. You should easily find PDF copies for those two searches.

Another good site is
http://www.sleeman-hawken.co.uk/files/service-and-maintanence-tips.pdf .

After you have downloaded these sources, and you are still missing stuff, let us know what. Several of us have drawings and other stuff on our hard drives. For specific problems, surf other engines for your specific problem. This site has a huge amount of information to troubleshoot diesel engines.

saab 2GZ for sale:
Where is the engine located? Post some pictures, When was it last run? What is wrong with it? Have to prepared the engine for storage- anti freeze full, pressurized the fuel system for preservation, changed oil, fogged down cylinder- There is probably many other steps that should be taken.

The freight on engine will be a killer- I paid $800 , which was a "deep discount" using company freight forwarding to ship a Sabb 2H from Seattle to CT.- say 3000 miles.- I think the weight was 700 pounds.

I have a SABB Model G installed in a 1970 Dell Quay Fisherboat 19 that I recently purchased and would like to know if anyone knows of a new factory parts supplier in the U.S. I'm located in the Southeast US and it appears the Sabbamerica folks out of Leesburg, FL are no longer in business. I'm looking for a source for simple general maintenance, service parts, supplies and advice.

I just talked to Bill Miller , Sabb America 305-589-2882, [email protected], 119 lake shore Circle, Leesburg , FL, 34788. He is doing great. His authorized territory now covers from Australia to AK, South American and North America.

A few years ago SABB was bought out by Frydenb Sabb Motor.

Peter- you should become a member of this site- There is wealth of information on this site. Do not restrict your reading to just Sabb engines- The real mechanics own or have owned Volvo- for example look at some of the write ups under Matt Morehouse or Erik -

Also keep an eye and contact Bill Miller to get a lead on a used Sabb- The castings will kill you if you do not have a back up engine in the backyard.

Randyman:
I believe what you are looking for is the Wiring diagram for a Bosch Dynastart HH/14V/HA, PART NUMBER .010.350.004 ( This could be Sabb's part number).
Never worked with a Dynastart. The guys in my boatyard say you are better off separating the starter from the generator- unless you liking playing with mechanical voltage regulators.
There are troops on this web site with excellent Bosch contacts.

There are certain things like water pump diaphragm that i can't imagine fabricating. The head gasket (on the single cylinder at least) is simply a ring of copper - i cut mine out of a sheet of copper and haven't had any issues. Could have annealed the old one, but it was too far gone. I have been using sleeman-hawkins for any parts needs with good results.

I have a Sabb G with the shaft and variable pitch propeller. They are installed in a project boat that I bought. The previous owner purchased them new and never plumbed the engine. I don't believe that it has ever been run. I would like to sell the engine shaft and propeller as a package. They are located in Havre De Grace, MD. Asking $3100. I also have a lot of spare parts. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. [email protected]

I spent a few minutes looking at the exploded parts diagram on the head but could not find the P/N.
I think I took mine to a national parts dealer ( NAPA) and they found something that the threads matched and it worked with the gage I had.

So you are from Estonia. Your cheapest bet is to buy a whole used engine with a good head. The way I found mine was start with the USA dealer, Bill Miller about possible leads. He knew a guy that loved SABB in Seattle ( 3000 miles from Bill)

Suggest you contact Erik Jansen at Sabb Norway ( [email protected]) an expert on old Sabb. And the service manager [email protected]
also [email protected]

They will know who on the Baltic Sea is still ordering parts. , These people will know who may have an engine for sale

And more important- the model numbers that your head will match.

What happened to the cylinder head?

I have a Sabb model G 10 hp was working fine 2 weeks ago when last used it but went out to start it up and now wont start. the hand crank wont move at all and the flywheel wont move. No water contamination in the oil. The engine normally starts very well, as run it up every 2 - 3 weeks. A fitter said engine is seized but not sure if this is true. Any idea's thanks

RICK:
If the clutch is disengaged, can you rotate the prop shaft?

2, Looking at the flywheel, can you rotate the engine COUNTER clockwise- with the decompression lever down- valves open? - this is the opposite direction that the engine cranks., you might have to put a socket on the flywheel - see below on" paw"

3. Take off the valve cover- do you have oil residue? if yes then I doubt the engine is seized-

I had this problem on my 2H - probably you have a broken "paw" which is part of the hand crank system, pull off the clutch adjustment plate, take a small magnet and see if you can fish out any broken parts- In my case the paw was caught between the crank shaft gear and the crank assembly

Right now I cannot find the exploded parts on this assembly

Keep us posted

Can anyone explain how to protect the controllable pitch prop behind a Sabb model G from galvanic corrosion? There is no exposed prop shaft onto which a shaft zinc or hub zinc can be attached. It would be possible to bolt a hull zinc nearby and wire it to a mounting stud on the stern bearing housing but I'm not sure if it is electrically connected to the prop and shaft since it is a shaft-within-a-shaft arrangement for operation of the CPP and I believe there is a layer of grease between the shafts. The engine has a separate heat exchanger so there is no seawater passing through the engine, and the bronze seawater through-hull is the only other metal in the water. I've tried to examine photos and videos of other Sabb CPPs and don't see any zincs, and I called Mr. Miller and he said he'd never heard of them corroding in seawater, but this is frankly kind of hard for me to understand. This boat I recently bought has spent the last few years in a lake and there's no sign of any corrosion control devices on it but I'm putting it back into the good old salty ocean.
Anyone have experience with this? There are thousands in Scandinavia but I don't have anyone there to ask, and the Sabb factory has so far declined to reply to my inquiry.
Thanks in advance.

Youtube Sabb Model " G ". Variable pitch Propeller

Hello, my prop has been in salt water since launch
1974.
The model G is fitted in my 32 foot grp hull.

The boat has never had an annode.

Please google the text above to view me opening the prop housing. It is indistinguishable from new.

This little engine and prop has taken the boat far and wide. She is currently on the Turkish coast.

Our 2H has an anode on the coolant side of the exhaust manifold. We have closed loop keel cooling. The anode corrodes. No other anode. No obvious corrosion to the prop/shaft. Engine is a 1978, salt water service.

I have the same closed loop but with a heat exchanger cooled with sea water. The anode in the cooling water tank will not get consumed in a closed system. I do have to replace the anode in the sea water supply side of the heat exchanger.
And I have 2 anodes connected to the prop assembly

Terry Johnson- Yes you to hard wire the zincs with a copper straps bolted the prop housing bolt. To verify the connection, use an ohm meter from the zinc to the prop. Resistance should not be much more than when you connect to the two lead wires of the multimeter together.
Boat yards are notorious to stray currents creating galvanic action. My zincs loose about 10-20% of weight annually. ( I use to melt them down for decoy weights)

Bruce:

Sorry you are in the UK, I have a spare but it needs welding. Based on the picture above by Scottcain, Feb 2, 2008, The manifold for all Sabbs are the same- both single cylinder and the 2 H. Take your existing manifold to a welder with a track record of welding cast iron- very difficult.

Since this manifold cost new $900-1500 , you might be better off buying a complete used engine. talk to the Sabb dealer in UK , http://www.sleeman-hawken.co.uk/ Great website.
With the help of the USA distributor, I found my used 2H in Seattle- 3000 miles away- the freight cost more than the engine- but I have taken the manifold, injectors, injector lines and starter- so far.

When you put the engine back together, make sure the exhaust pipe is sloping away from the manifold. Condensing exhaust rotted my first manifold.

I have a problem with a Sabb H-1965 gearbox on a model GG engine. Its 48 years old and possibly never been serviced. Its functioning in forwards and reverse, but with very little power being transmitted through. Im pretty sure that nothing is completely broken, but it needs at least significant adjustment and quite possibly the clutch cones relining.

Ive done some research and have obtained a maintenance manual, identified that parts are available from Sleeman & Hawken, but need an engineer to do the work.

Its on our narrowboat is in St Pancras Basin, London. I am told that the adjustment needs to be done on the engine. So preferably someone in the London area.

If it is still turning ( in reverse) and not making grinding or other awful sounds, then it is likely still workable.

Take the top cover off to see if there ugly bits floating around - likely not.

You should see how the shifting lever engages the reverse band - it will tighten it. There isn't much movement so you'll have to look closely. Something is holding it in the tightened position and that's what you'll have to find.

You should be able to free the shifting fingers that move the cone so that the transmission is in neutral.

If you've gotten that far, slowly turn the engine over to see that the neutral is working OK. Then try the FWD position.

Some carefully placed thumps with a soft faced hammer may be needed.

Still Looking for a complete vari pitch set up for my Sabb G. Shaft, trunk and prop. Why do people pull the engine and scrap the rest with the boat. 3 times I've run across this ! Bill
