Hello,

I have a build-your-own-boat (a large steel hull with a BMC diesel engine (don't know the type) in it). I would like to know a lot more about this particular engine, but I don't have any information about it. Now, it seems that it is a rather simple engine (around 1970-1975), but I would like to know a little more. Does anyone know or have a digitized version of the manuals of BMC diesel engines around that age?

I hope to hear more, thanks in advance.

With kind regards,

Ronald.

G'day,
I have the workshop manual for the tempest series of BMC's, This covers the 3.8, 5.1, and 5.7 liter marine conversionsn of that period.
It is only in hard copy, but if it is of use to you I'll take a minute and scan it.
Cheers Sam

Hello Sam,
Yes, that would certainly be a great help. I was half hoping to do a part overhaul on my sons boat engine while the good weather is lasting over this side of the atlantic. The electronic copy would be great as a quick read now before striping might save a few problems later.
Broadband here so no problem downloading material.

Thanks & Regards - Patrick.

The workshop manual has all the info you will need for an overhaul.

Does anyone have a BMC 2.2 manual they could share? Amongst other things I've discovered the engine in my narrowboat (keel cooled) doesn't have a thermostat and I would like to know what the correct temperature should be. Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Purge the fuel system and add fresh fuel
Then New batteries
My guess is that it starts up if there isnt water in the fuel system
Please note an oil change is in order also

hi roger with the studs removed the pump body should just pull out sounds as tho the seal and or bearings have gone west where are you located/ as i could put you on to a engineer in the uk who could renew it if you cant get a replacement part. tho peatland exports will no doubt have bits

hi aussie the engine your refering to would be a thorneycroft{marine branch of bmc} so try lookin for bits for that i have had several of these engines in 1.8 form and theyre a great motor chain driven camshaft so little to go wrong they were the standard fit of all canal boats in the uk and as far as i know still being made in india let me know how you get on the manualman in posting above this claims to have 1.5 manual

Hi everyone.
I have registered a few seconds ago. I was trying to find information about an old BMC 3.4 liters diesel engine, Commodore Marine of unknwon age and happyly run onto you!!!!!!
I live and sail in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the southest most city in the whole world.
Is there any chance to get a Manual? I only have a few old photocopies- Digital or paper.

Does it have the technical description of the starter, a LUCAS 18 S ?
I will apreciate any info that helps me fix the starter.
Thank you all and have a good day.

in answer to montrose re bmc 2.2 no smoke out your zorst means no diesel getting in engine at injectors tho you said youd bled them off. ive got a 5.7 and had 4 1.8\sbmcs good motors! on the 1.8 inj pump are several bleed points which if not bled the motor just wont go 2.2 may be the same let me know how you get on, my neighbour next berth has a bmc 2.2 will see if she has manual tho she doesnt live aboard so dont hold your breath

would anyone of you know where I can get a pulley for the waterpump for a 1.5 liter BMC /Thornycroft engine. I checked by some of the major distributors, but no luck

Thanks Doug

Hi
I think you can get one through www.jcl-tech.dk

Mail with measures to get the correct one.

Cheers, Chr

Doug,
If it is the pulley for the fresh water circulating pump then try one of the MG car specialists as I think that the water pump pulley is the same as that on the 1.8 petrol engine as fitted to the MGB. You should be able to find a used one for virtually nothing. If it is the pulley for the raw water pump you may need to buy a pulley blank fom someone such as HPC Gears and have he centre machined to suit the Jabsco.
Hope this helps.

Thanks ChrLandmark, just looked at the site. Ist not good for a pully but good to know for other things.
Thanks roadster541, had a simular idea and went to a Mini workshop – got pretty near to it but not quite the right one. Will check MG. Otherwise I will have it made out of aluminium on a lade. Ist the pully for the fresh water pump. It is amasing, you get the pumps everywhere but not the pully.
Take care and thanks for now

Hi,I look after a 1978 47ft narrowboat for the Scouts with a 1500 bmc diesel engine. In the last 12 months it has had new filters (before and after the lift pump)new lift pump, recon injectors, recon metering pump and various fuel hoses/pipes and connections. The problem is it runs for 10 hours continuous or more and then stalls on tickover in a lock and will not restart.By bleeding the injectors after 3/4 attempts 1/2 an hour later it fires up and runs for 15hours or so and does it again. If on short 5hr multiple runs its fine/Any Ideas.Keith

its possible that the tank might be vacuming, check vents. a pinhole in a fuel line or leaking union will cause a air pocket to form over time and engine to conk out. check all joins maybe ptfe any dodgy ones and possible o ring in filter bruised and letting in air if you can put a length of clear pipe in the return to the tank temporarily to see if air in the line youll see bubbles while engine running good luck

Air in the fuel line.
Keith Allen- one way of finding the leaks and a back up when the engine starts to slow down to stall- add a hand squeeze pump on the outlet to the tank. ( The type of squeeze pump that is common on outboard motor tanks). On my Sabb 2H, I Had a fuel leak start during water spout storm( tornado) off the New England coast and this pump saved the day.

Hi, my father in-law is having some problems with his starter motor, the engine is a 1.5 BMC inboard. He has taken it in to the place where he bought it and they have found traces of water in the shaft, bushes and the electrics but does'nt know where the water is coming from. Can any body help or have you had a similar problem that has been resolved? thankyou.

Hi Eric,
Well first I would check all the heaters to make sure they are working, second, do the injectors need servicing? I would think as you say it is running ok when started the injection pump is ok,
These engines do not start up cleanly, I always use full throttle and 15 to 20 sec heat (longer if it is very cold) and turn the key to start and keep it in the start position until it fires up and starts increasing revs before letting the starter stand down and reducing the throttle,
They do tend to breath slightly but this should not be excessive and if it is you will have to look at the crank case breather to check for a blockage, failing that it will be worn bores.
Hope this helps.

crank speed is everything when starting. fitting extra beefy power leads to starter pos and neg can help, put neg lead directly onto starter mounting bolt. wire length and thickness is an issue with high currents as in start up. does pos wire go through isolator? if so ensure all joins are soldered as well as crimped. each join in cable is a potential power loss. oils drag when cold , you can have thinner oil for winter use . arctic boats and lorries have coolant water heaters for this reason. in the old days a fire would be lit under sump of lorries in v cold weather. hope this is of help .email me if i can be of further help am in uk

Hi Tim,
I would suggest a blocked sea cock and or filter, the impeller in the pump broken or worn, or a worn pump, I would also suggest you check any oil coolers to see they are not blocked or restricted with deposits down the tubes, if all this is ok then you might be looking at taking the head off and cleaning out the waterways, BMC engine heads do tend to block there waterways with deposits over time, this is assuming your thermostat (if you are using one) is working correctly.
Regards Keith Marine Engineer.

I have a 1500cc BMC diesel in my 20' river launch.

The boat only went back in the water two weeks ago but now the under engine catch tray has filled with most of the engine coolant.

However I cannot see an obvious leak from the hoses or anywhere else for that matter.

Any ideas please?

BMC 1500 Diesel fuel timing. Circa 1970's
Hi, Am unable to locate a timing gauge to set as per manual.
Can anyone assist with the settings for the spill timing for the above engine.
Or just confirmation of the start of injection.
The 22Deg BTDC that is the setting for the use of the gauge seems much to early for an old style engine. But I'm willing to be proved wrong.
The engine had been disassembled before I started it so no previous position or marks are available.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.
Regards John

I have no experience with BMC diesels but the Perkins P series with indirect injection Aeroflow combustion chambers had a spill timing of 29BTDC. What helped when working out pump nad valve timing was the starter ring had 123 teeth ie as near as dammit 3 degrees to a tooth and they were nice big teeth usually visible through a hole in the flywheel housing which also gave TDC . If you need to know more, I am happy to help. Does the engine have jerk or rotary type fuel pump/

Can anyone please tell me what order the washers & spring goes when fitting a new oil filter in a 1.5 BMC (not screw type filter) The machanic was taken ill & this is all that needs fitting before trying engine. Searched the net for a diagram to no avail. The machanic unbolted the oil filter casing from the bottom. removed the filter & left the casing, a spring, a few small metal washers, a cloth washer a big rubber ring & large round plate if thes any help? Would be great if I could obtain a diagram. Been waiting 3 mths to try the engine after a rebuild only for the machanic to have a serious accident the day before thew new filter arrived.
thx in advance

Hi Don, Dont know if the attachment works so here's the order in the parts book.

Start with Long bolt with steel cup washer either welded on to hex head of bolt or slid down, with concave surface facing up, to match base of main filter bowl.

Next lubricate the rubber "O" ring or flat rubber washer (there should be new 1 with the filter, this is a most common area for leaks) and slide on to bolt until it nestles inside the cup.

Slide steel filter container onto bolt

Slide spring onto bolt

Slide plain steel washer onto bolt
Lubricate felt washer (or rubber washer)(again new if supplied but not imperative unless old one is breaking up) and slide down bolt

Slide pressure plate washer(Nipple facing upwards) to be able to marry with inside bottom of filter element.

Slide (Jelly baby shaped) spring clip down bolt onto pressure plate, (you may have to wind it down the threads of the bolt if it is tight, do not prise apart).

Ensure all are pushed down inside of the container but no need to pressurise.

Slide in filter element.

See if a new square section rubber ring (3-4mm cross section. About same diameter as top of steel container)has been supplied with filter.
If so ensure old ring has been remove from underside of filter housing head.
Lubricate new ring with grease and fit into recess.
When fitting assembled filter, do not be tempted to spin the container on, as this can catch up on the large rubber ring and twist it, causing a leak.
Hope this helps Regards John

Hello everyone

I have a problem with smoking engines ! They are Thorneycroft 154's (2.52). They both smoke quite a lot on first start up of the day until warm. All the injectors have been refurbished and new sets of glow plugs fitted. As soon as there is a load put on them i.e put in gear the excess smoke stops even when engines are cold. I've been putting up with this for a while and is getting a bit embarrasing. Last week a marine engineer told me he could stop the engines from smoking for about £200 but didn't say what he would do. Having just spent £1000 on having one of the gearboxes overhauled with him, it would be quite handy and cheaper to know if I could cure them myself. Any suggestions or advice welcome.

Hi there,
Before making any suggestions;
What colour is the smoke. As this indicates the basic problem on any diesel engine.
Light Blue?
Brownish Black?
White?

i have noticed these engines smoking on idle and then clearing whilst under load and can only presume its down to cylinder wear. when an engine is under load it throws the piston onto one side of the cylinder which causes them to wear unevenly, on idle the piston runs more centrally but piston rings no longer contacting as evenly. . new rings or rebore being the only answer, to that problem another simpler cause of smoking is the little rubber seals on the inlet valves or stem seals as theyre known as these perish due to age oil in the rockerbox can be sucked past the valve guide into the engine and cause smoking ,a quick fix is to put wynns oil seal conditioner in the oil which causes the seals to swell and stop leaking http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogI d_10151_productId_154689_langId_-1_categoryId_165750 always useful on any old motor. most people just run in gear when battery charging make sure mooring ropes are well secured and dont run on the mooring for long before you set off good luck

Thanks for the advice everybody.

Will give the Wynns a try first, both engines still have a good 5 bar of oil pressure on tick over which i think is quite good for 30 year engines, neither engine uses hardly any oil at all.

The colour of the smoke is greyish but smells of unburnt diesel, initial thought that pump timing might be slightly out, but they start first time and dont smoke at all when under load, unless giving it a bit of welly.

Thanks again for the advice, all suggestions welcome.

BMC COMMODORE 3.4

... and by teh way Ive now taken this unit down to nothing and its coming back up again bright and shiny. Was originally installed in 1950 and it looks like some of it hasnt been touched since new. So some experience developing here. If anyone needs help with one of these then maybe I can help.

In particular Ive spent several weeks tracking down suppliers for parts.

At some point I will put some posts up with what I have found out.

BMC engine no 38VD1339Z25680.

Are you sure it doesn't start 18VD...? This would be a post 1970 1.8 engine. V indicates Vertical (ie NOT a V8, V6, etc). Crazy logic but there you go.
I'm guessing the D means it's a diesel but someone else will have to confirm that!

According to an original Leyland Parts Book for a BMC 1500 diesel. The last 5 or 6 numbers are the serial number of the engine. The preceding letters and numbers are the build detail specification code.
Is the fuel injection pump a round rotary type fitted on the back left (Looking from the front)just above the starter motor. This would indicate that it is a 1500.
If not: What type of vessel is it fitted in?
Size, weight, type. How many cylinders?
Were iss the inj pump fitted and how is it driven?

To Gemini; A few more thoughts that might head you in the right direction.
The exhaust manifold heat exchanger may have a manufacturers plate which gives a model and serial number. These were general specific to one size of engine. Bowman still exist and have some records. If it is a Bowman manifold it may also have a number cast onto it's side indicating the engine it is for, mine has "1500/1800" as these used the same block and head for both.

IMt BMC Commodore engine does not idle correctly. It starts OK but the revs go up to over 1500 immediately the throttle is touched and stays high. It will not return to its normal idle speed of 600 RPM.

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

To; Yachtview.
Sounds like the Idle Damper adjustment is badly set.
Not sure which pump is fitted to your particular engine but you should be able to find a manual on the net which will explain
Can you confirm the cc size of the engine and number of cylinders as nearly all of the BMC diesels tend to get called a Commodore.
If its one of the smaller engine I may have the relevant info.
Regards John

Hi folks,
My boat (circa 1975 vintage, Broom) has a BMC Tempest engine.I have read all the posts on this forum regarding this type of engine. I do not have a manual and would be grateful if someone could send me one by e-mail. I want to conduct a basic service (change oil, filter and fuel filter, but I cannot find the hand operated fuel "lift pump". I also want to get a spare impellor for the water pump, but I dont know the type or part number. As you can see, I am a willing amateur with little knowledge, so any and all help will be appreciated.

Hi John,
Need a bit of clarification as Tempest were the marinisers of the BMC block not the model or size.
Do you know the cc?
What size is the boat?
What speed is it supposed to do?
Let me know and we'll see what we can do. John

My BMC 1.8 has white steam/smoke emitting from the exhaust when running anywhere more than half throttle. I am engineering challenged so simple answers will work best, even if it's call a mechanic.

ip24, Hi Tim
Ref; Steam/Smoke.
Is it steam or smoke?
Is it white and billowing or does it have a bluish tint to it? (This one indicates engine oil)
Does it leave an oil slick on the water?
Possibilities!
If it is steam, then you are getting water into one or more of the cylinders, probably sucked in past the cylinder head gasket.
If it is pure white smoke then it is totally unburned atomized fuel. This is caused by either severe loss of compression in one or more of the cylinder, unlikely. Or possibly a weak spring in 1 or more of the fuel injectors so that the fuel isn't getting up to enough pressure to ignite when injected into the cylinder.
Either way there is no quick fix I would advise a mechanic.
Unfortunatly your to far away to offer assistance.
Hope it helps John

Hello,
Where is the engine number on a 3.8l BMC engine.
I was told it was stamped on the block under No4
injector but nothing is stamped in that position.
there is a casting number on a plate riveted in that location but nothing else.
Regards
Phil.

@ottoburn434
look at pot 4, starboard side.
Stamped on top of the block on a little flat area beside the head.
If it is blank then the head has been skimmed and you're stuffed :-)
You will have to do a bit of detective work - you might get help here...

Hello all, it is nearly 12 months since my last post and I have yet another question. The engine on my boat is a BMC Commodore 2.2(?) litre, marinised by Tempest (thanks John for your input). My question is: when I was in the process of changing the engine oil, I moved a small brass 2-way lever located at the back of the engine and this allowed me to pump out the oil by means of the in-situ pump. When I replaced the engine oil I noticed that the gear box oil had also been extracted, so I replenished both the engine and gear box with the same oil, through the engine oil-filler port. Since then (100 engine hours ago) the engine and gear box have both run well. Should I have put a different oil in the gear box and if so, through what filler port?
Many thanks
John

The oil leak is from the 2.5 bmc engine where the shaft comes out the back of the engine block.the oil is seaping down into the flywheel housing.
I also seek a workshop manual for this engine.

my other engine is a 2.2 bmc and it needs a new crankshaft.

To Jim Corrigan
Hi Jim
Bent push rods mean the valves have collided with the piston crowns.
This may have damaged the pistons or rings and/or possibly bent one or more of the valve stems.
A compression test would confirm if you have problems in one or more cylinder.

Or with engine running at tick over, crack each injector pipe in turn and see if this alters the engine speed. Re tighten the nut before proceeding to next injector.

Do you have difficulty starting from cold?

What colour is the smoke?
White billowing indicates atomised but un burned diesel
Black brown indicates diesel burning slowly not under pressure.
Blue tinted white smoke indicates engine oil burning. Either rings or pistons damaged or valve guides or seals damaged.

What area are you in?
Let me know and I'll advise further
Regards John

whilst repairing a friends 50 ft narrow boat with bmc 1.5 diesel engine, which was making heavy white smoke ,I discovered the cause was a recent overhaul ,where the exhaust valve stem oil seals had been replaced by ones of unknown origin from a head gasket set and on examination they/d melted/stuck to the valve stem detached from the guide and were effectively pumping oil down past the guide into the nice hot exhaust making loads of smoke. replacing them with original bmc ones off ebay and now its fine so beware of non original parts, the head gasket incedentally was ok

Hi there
has anyone access to the manual or an exploded view of the gearbox/engine connection for a BMC Commander engine & a Newage mechanical gearbox as there is an oil leak between the engine & gearbox, probably gearbox oil, but not sure how the units split apart, i.e do you remove the bell housing with the gearbox attached or just the gearbox from the bell housing. I expect it will only be one of these ways but need to do it the right way first time to avoid difficulty.
Has anyone done this job? does anyone know where I can access a breakdown of the unit.

The gearbox is fitted with a 2;1 reduction box, the gear lever connection is a splined cross shaft on the aft lower base of the casting, the oil dipstick in central on the top of the casting with a brass filler nut just aft if that helps describe the unit

in my experience of prm gboxs on bmc engines its usually the crankshaft oil seal thats gone which could be age most of these engines are older than there owners but can be cured by an oil additive which makes the oil seals revive and swell up slightly have used one with sucess made by wynns o/s http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WYNNS-PROFESSIONAL-77441-ENGINE-OIL-STOP-LEAK-325ml-Ca n-/110977549532?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%25 2BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D190586100844%26ps%3D54 failing that to remove on every gearbox Ive seen you have to remove the bellhousing as the bolts holding the gearbox to it are on the inside of the b/h not a bad idea as you can check if the drive plate is ok though as they say if it aint broke dont fix it good luck

Hi,
A bit off topic I know, but I am in the process of buying a Landrover Forward Conrol, which has in it a BMC 3.8 4 cylinder diesel engine. This is not a standard engine for this vehicle - I expect it originally came out of an Austin truck. I wondered if anybody has a workshop manual for this engine? I'm having trouble locating one anywhere....
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello everyone.
Does anybody have a BMC 6 cylinder diesel 5.1/5.7 workshop manual??
I'm desperate to start stripping parts, but need to know timings etc.
Hope you can help!
Many thanks?
Jordan.

Hello, I have just purchased a 1927 motor yacht with a BMC Sealord, 5.1 engine and a BMC commander 2.2 engine (wing engine)
The Sealord is partially dismantled (head, various ancillaries removed) and likely past saving due to water ingress into the cylinders. The 2.2 is unknown and also likely to need rebuilding. I have a partial manual for the Sealord ( complete manual but has severe water damage I have managed to salvage it but some of it is unreadable/(pages stuck together). Not willing to part with it but might have the info you need.

Doing a valve job for my 1.5L BMC diesel. This was sold in the US as a Westerbeke W30(4-91)-need new inner and outer valve springs. Not available online. Anyone know of a source?
Greatly appreciated, Lonner

Take your pick: lots of suppliers in the UK and non-marine applications mean much cheaper prices:

Help - I'm broken down in Ardrossan Scotland and need some advice re a bmc 2.52 ( thornycroft 154)
If any experts are within travelling distance please yell.
Although I have rocker settings I'm unsure which order the inlet and outlet valves are. Are they ( from front) ex/in ex/in ex/in ex/in or is there another sequence?
Be really appreciated kind regards Andrew c

Most 4 cylinder firing order is 1 3 4 2. If you watch the rockers on #4, as the exhaust closes the intake opens. At the point when they switch will be top center compression on #1, you can set both valves on # 1, one valve on #2, and one valve on #3. One of each of the valves on 2 & 3 will be loose, the other two will be in the open position, set the loose ones. Turn the engine one revolution, the valves on #1 will be rocking over, you can now set both on #4, and the remaining on 2 & 3.

In the beginning of this thread there were workshop manuals for the 3,8 l Leyland engines. Does anyone here still have this. I would highly appreciate a copy in any form. I have a Leyland Thornycroft T230R engine which is the Leyland 4/98 3,8 ltr engine

Regards
Mortan

Can someone advice me the Torque values for a BMC Commander 2.2 cylinder head?
My head gasket blew out after a water lock.
Trying to find a digital operators hand book, can only find 1.5 and 3.4 .
Willing to pay for the manual but need digital Torque values urgently.
