Hi all.I'm looking at buying a 55ft ex trawler with a 300hp(says owner) hercules model # DNX 6.
The herc won't start because the pre heat spark plug is worn down and not firing.
I would like to hear from anyone who knows about these big hercules, parts (esp champion j-9-604)availibility,common problems etc.Thanx.

I don't see that model number in my books. My champion book shows a J 99 plug/igniter thats used in furneses or in those old manifold heaters that threw flame into manifolds for diesel starting.

My champion book is only 5 years old so that should be available. Most of the herc models have the X in the middle,Like zxb, jxc, yxt. The closest thing i see is DIX and its only 100hp.When herc adds the 6 at the end of a model number they normally made a 4 cylinder version with the same bore and stroke. You may have to check the model munber again.

I have a Hercules DNX 6 on a 45ft wooden tugboat that is ex-navy. I have a few copied pages from a workshop manual relating to torque settings and valve clearances, and also injector pump timing that I got when I purchased the boat. Parts are almost impossible to come by. I have had advice from a few of the people that worked on them from the navy docks on Goat Island on Sydney harbour. The supercharger on these engines were chain driven, which led to a few problems ie. the chain broke. My engine had the supercharger removed. The fuel heater on my engine had been removed, but it does start after about half a minute of cranking. When I purchased the boat, the owner started it with the aid of aerostart, but this can be dangerous in large diesels as you can get some detonation and engine damage, and also the engine get addicted to it.I have been trying to get some spares for the raw water pump, but no luck as of yet. These engines when they run take a while to warm up, and will blow a bit of white smoke, this is probably due to no clearance on the valve when the engine is cold. They are also known to breathe a bit through the oil breather, and most have an external breather fitted to the engine room. They are rated at 300hp with the supercharger and have flat top pistons with expansion chambers on the port side of the engine. The starter motor is 32 volts, this was I think due to many of the army and airforce engines being 32 volts, and the engine is positive earth. If you want any of the workshop copies i can send you some.
