Mike,

I have a lot of the FM marine diesel manuals, but I would need to know what "model" engine your friend has. It should be on the nameplate on the engine. Post it below or send me an email.

Post a picture of the boat & engine if you can too... what year is it?

Regards,
Andrew

andrew, the engine's model is 33D14 and the year is 1937. this engine is a monster! from what i have been told the previous owner passed away and the family sold the boat. he had begun to dismantel the engine to repair a smoking problem,(engine, not the guy). my father who has worked on these in the past, said the aux. fuel pump plunger in the injection pump had alot of play and that could have been the cause. he found one in P.A. for $700. by the way the tug is located in Bayonne, N.J. along with me not far away in Jersey City.

thanks mike-

Mike,

Okay, I will take a look to see if I have a manual for that model.

I used to work for a tug company in Camden, New Jersey that had two boats with 10 cylinder FM 38D-8-1/8 engines from the early 1950's. The boats and engines are still running. Commonly refered to as "submarine engines" because there were many used on diesel subs. A lot of tugboat engineers in the 1950's and 60's were ex-submarine guys.

Mike,

I checked and it seems that I don't have a manual for that model number. I have other FM manuals in storage that I will try to get to, but I can't promise that I will get there soon.

Regards,
Andrew

Hello mowerman,
I have a F-M Manual for C-O models, but I think this predates yours. I also have a Manual for stationary 32 series; maybe some of it would apply? Sorry it has taken me this long to look and respond. I guess this is some of the short comings of my visual filing system. If you are interested, I'd be happy to make copies for you.

Another tug guy...
