I am in the process of rebuilding an M-60 and have bought a copper head gasket that is a perfect fit. The gasket is however solid metal 1/16th thick that is not compressible at all. The original gasket and a new one (not copper) I got from IHC are compressible. I have two concerns, 1. a solid gasket will not conform to the imperfections in the block and head even though I'll put several layers of spray on gasket dressing on and 2. will a 1/16th inch solid plate between the block and the head affect the compression of the engine? Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Why did you not buy a typical copper head gasket made up from two thin pieces of copper with modern compressable material between the copper sheets. One would expect the water passage holes to be sealed with copper rims as well as the cylinder rims. I have no idea wether your solid gasket will work or not.

I had no idea that solid gaskets were available and so I just presumed (wrongly) that a "copper head gasket" would be a compressible one.

I remember useing one like that on an engine, don't remember which engine. The instructions were to use copper coat gasket sealer on both sides.I recently went looking for the copper coat in the screw top cans and could only find it in spray cans. The engine must still be working i don't remember taking it apart.
