My Palmer heads have two spark plug holes, the obvious head bolts around the perimeter and a large bolt dead center of the head. What is this? If it is a plug to access the center of the piston will removing it dump built up debris into the cylinder. Thanks Scott

Scott the center plug is intended for checking the proper setting of the valves. See the Palmer drawing 11086 in the ZR handbook. If you remove the plug first clean out any debrie around the plug. Incidentally its a 7/8" 18 THD plug and if people lost the plug they would stick an old spark in place of the lost plug. Other people think it is a third spark plug hole. If you look on the drawing you will see various measurement indicated. For example at 8 degree past TDC the intake valve will open and the piston will have move down 1/32" inch. The Exhaust opens when the piston is 5/8" before BDC and the Intake closes when the piston is 9/16" after BDC. The drawing also show the spark advance at operating speed as 25 Degrees before TDC. These measurments are easy to make and one can get a pretty good idea of how much wear in the gearing and cam shaft follower areas with out tearing the engine apart.

I have a Palmer Engine #47233-9 Model M60 22Hp after running it. Water is pumping out of a crack I found in the? Water manifold? I am not sure what it is called. It is where the water comes into a chamber, goes threw the thermostat passes threw the motor, and the exhaust is connetected in the back. The previous owner must not have drained it before winter. Any ideas where I could find another part. The motor is a 1970, I'm not sure where to find somthing that old.

Your engine was made in 1969 according to the serial number. The engine parts are IHC CUB tractor parts. The marine trim is Palmer. Eg. Flywheel, crankcase supports to engine bed. Distributor lash up and alternator drive. The Carburetor is Zenith 61 which is a marine carburetor. NAPA 2-1565 is the rebuild kit for the carburetor. Costs about $30.00 The exhaust manifold is the critical item they are very hard to find. Was this engine used in fresh or salt water and if in salt water was it fresh water cooled. That is 50:50 anti freeze fresh water??. If salt water cooled your manifold will be the deciding factor on what to do. If fresh water cooled then if the crack is in the water jacket of the engine or the head no problem. Have an IHC dealer rebuild a Cub tractor block using your marine crankshaft. All the standard IHC parts will work except the crankshaft was ground by IHC for Palmer to meet up with the Paragon reverse gear so you cannot use a standard tractor crankshaft. They can grind your crankshaft for oversize IHC bearing inserts with no problem. Just don't talk Palmer to the IHC dealer. They will think you are from Planet Z or worse. Junk you Palmer block if it is rusted through or cracked and a standard Cub Tractor block will bolt right up. You won't use the governor of the tractor configuration so don't worry about it. Save all the marine trim as you will need that to bolt your reverse gear to the rebuilt tractor block. The flywheel is Palmer and you should save it along with the carburetor and distributor mountings, alternator trim and drive. The water pump is Palmer trim as is the thermostat for the recirculation line. I suspect your engine is not currently equiped with a heat exchanger for sslt water.
