What is copper sandwich construction? I thought they were solid copper. I could certainly use one if the construction will stand up to the salt water.

Copper sandwich (also known as copper clad) is an asbestos or non-asbestos composite material clad in copper sheet, with fire rings to seal the bore. These particular gaskets were produced using a steel sandwich Palmer gasket provided by a customer as a template. We reproduced that gasket completely, with the exception that copper was substituted for steel. Copper sandwich gaskets were a quite common construction technique for head gaskets in prior years but lost out to composites because they are simpler and cheaper to mfg. and because copper is more expensive compared to comp. material.

I don't have any statistics on copper gaskets vs. salt water, but a lot of the marine and outboard gaskets that I have been making for customers were copper sandwich from the OEM, such as the Atomic 4 and some older Mercury outboards, etc.

Solid copper gaskets are great, but do not compress like a copper sandwich and will not take up any imperfections in the cyl. head or block. If you use one you must be absolutely sure both surfaces are flat and unblemished.

Are the water passages sealed with copper bushings so salt water cannot penetrate? If not they are vunerable to salt water penetration of the composite. The compressable copper gaskets that Palmer used are too often replaced with the IHC Cub Lo-Boy steel gasket and then used in salt water with disastrous results. If the engine is fresh water cooled no problem but salt quickly destroys the steel gasket. The tractor gasket makes a good pattern but one must be sure the water passages are bushed in copper.
I seem to get a request a week for P-60 head gaskets so in the future I will refer them to this page suggesting they contact you.

Richard,

Thank you very much for your post. These gaskets were made from a customer-supplied steel gasket that I now realize was the IHC version of the Palmer. I have ordered a new batch of copper gaskets with the water passages bushed (sealed), and will be shipping those to anyone who buys one of the gaskets currently listed on e-Bay. I sold three unbushed copper gaskets last week and have already informed those customers that I will be sending them new gaskets. Fortunately those just went out and thus have not been installed.

I appreciate your offer to pass along requests. I am happy to make gaskets in any quantity from one on up, and there are no tooling or set-up charges for most gaskets.
