Am looking for a replacement oil breather cap/dipstick for a Palmer IH60 HD Engine #5842659 and a accessory drive belt between water pump and alternator. Belt pulleys suggest a flat belt with treads. Belt would be approx 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 wide and 18-18.5 inches long. Not the typical V-belt on most accessory drive pulleys. Any suggestions?

Thanks

The IH tractor engine is designated C60. The Palmer is P-60.

Did you look at Steiner Tractor part # IHS406. Looks a lot like it but does not show attached dip stick on "view image".

Engine #5842659 was marinized by "The Palmer Engine Co." in 1959. Of the large number of M-60 AKA P-60s that I have heard of this is a first with a flat belt drive on the alternator. I suspect it was not shipped from the factory with that belt drive set up. I would suggest going to a belt supply house for a replacement. One needs to keep in mind the full title for the IHC C-60 tractor engine is CUB LO-BOY, C-60. Don't talk Palmer to the IHC tractor dealer they will think you are losing it. You probably can get a useable dip stick from any IHC tractor dealer but keep in mind the local IHC truck dealers and tractor dealers may be totally different operations. If you find a used dipstick make sure you clean the breather in gasoline to remove and residual dust as the PCV system which is used on the Marine conversion isn't used in tractor application. In effect you will be sucking the old tractor dust into the crankcase via the PCV system if you don't clean the filter in the top of the dip stick. Hope this helps.

I have a IH 60 (22 hp) palmer, I am refurbishing it and was thinking that it might be a good idea to fresh water cool it - its going to be in salt water.

Does anyone have a list of parts and suppliers to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

You might want to try Moyer Marine's Atomic 4 site (http://moyermarine.com). The A4 is very similar to the Palmer M60. I believe Don Moyer has some schematics for fresh water cooling that could be easily adapted to your M60

Wayne, Idigo Elecronics makes a fresh water cooling system for the Atomic 4. It should work for a P-60 except that you would have to fabricate a bracket and figure out a way to run the raw water pump.

thanks for the leads, the Atomic 4 set up's look like they would work out with a bit of effort. Getting a pully on the front of the flywheel to run the pump looks like an issue. does anyone know if there is a stock item that can bolt in to the holes that the hand crank attachment uses. Other wise I guess something will have to be fabricated.

Wayne, buddy, pal, Palmer went out of business over 30 years ago. For all practical purposes you are dealing with an antique. If you want to go the fresh water route, you will have to do some jury rigging. Atomic4s are of a similiar size, power and even appearance but they share little else, save the carburator and thermostat (raw water). Atomic4s have the advantage in that they are more numerous and have good aftermarket support. Palmer P-60s do not. Be sure you know what you are up against before you venture into any major mecanical adventures with a P-60.

The flywheel and crankshaft are unique to the Palmer and different from the IH tractor engine. The flywheel must be repaired or gotten off of a scrapped Palmer P-60 engine. Palmer has been out of business for over 30 years and there is not enough Palmer P-60 engines left in existance to warrant after market production of parts peculiar to that engine.

I recently acquired a International Palmer self regulating alternator, 240 volt, 50 kw, 132 amp, 3 phase, 60 cycle, powered by a International UD 18-50-3P-12 engine. Seems to be in operating condition. Alt rebuilt. Looking for any information to restore or possibly part.

I am sorry but I have no info on this rare bird.
Will be interested in what you come up with. I doubt Palmer built the alternator and their normal practice was to make no changes on the basic engine which were not direct bolt on/off items. I would look to the International folks for engine detail and alternator maker for his guidance. 3 Phase alternators are pretty straight forward and any competent mechanic with alternator exsperience should be able to help sorting out the control panel. Typicaly when alternators get to be 50 KVA they have a separate electrical control panel from the engine controls

The only way that you can get the entire pump is from a scrapped Palmer engine as Palmer went out of busines 35 years ago. You sould be able to get a rebuild kit from a marine store giving the Sherwood number.

Your leak is likely a worn seal, which is included in a new major rebuild kit (actually there are two seals).

I just did a major rebuild on my E20. Kits available at: http://www.pumpvendor.com/Sherwood_E-20.html

But you may want to take Richard up on his offer for a good E20.

As for the rebuild, I didn't have any schematics, and the only challenge I had was getting the old bearings off the shaft. There are two sets of bearings back-to-back with a retaining clip in between. I didn't know this at the time, and used brute force to break one of the bearing casings, then I saw the retainer clip and could remove the other bearing much easier. I'm sure Richard or someone has a much better way to remove the old bearings! Other than that, the rebuild went smoothly and it is operating well with no leaks.

Hello everyone, I have 2 Sherwood e20 water pumps I want to rebuild. All of the rebuild kits I find have no shaft. Has anyone had any luck finding replacement shafts? We just about to pull and rebuild the Palmer and would like to rebuild the leaky pumps also.
