I have a Columbia 26 built in 1963 with a blue PW 27, this boat has been in salt water since new. I recently purchased a Green PW 27 that was installed in a sailboat built in 1967 and used in fresh water. The water jackets seem good by visual inpection through one of the freeze plugs. I am planning on using the cylinder off the green engine on the crankcase in the boat. I think it would be best to use the rod from the blue engine for the connection.

I also would like to know what thickness of gasket material to cut out for the interface between the crankcase and cylinder? In past I used fairly thick gasket material I bought at a auto parts store.

Any comments or suggestions?

Can you provide the serial numbers of the engines. Blue suggest post 1971 and green pre 1971. The problem with salt water engines is if you let the water jacket dry out it will crack just like freezing. Why not simply use the Green engine that has not had the salt water treatment and avoid the head gasket problem. For use in saltwater you need a copper covered head gasket. They are hard to impossible to find. You can have copies made at a fairly high price. What condition is the water jacket on the head? Why swap piston rod and piston? Don't understand. The Piston is the Wisconsin Model AFH and the rest of the engine is Wisconsin Model AEH except for the marine parts such as bottom oil pan reverse gear adapter etc. Send me an E-mail and lets chat a little further.

You can use any good gasket material the seal the upper cylinder to the crankcase. There is no preasurized oil or water going between them. You could remove the whole thing rod and all and just stick it on the other one with out disassemlbly. Most guys would want to replace the rings anyway.

My P-60 was running well, but last weekend it started up O.K. but would not rev up in forward gear. I changed the plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor and cap. I also took cylinder compression reading as follows #1-0, #2-105, #3-120, #4-0. I squirted Marvel Mystery oil in #1 and #4, but no luck, still) on both. Now the engine will not start. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how to remedy this? Is my Palmer dead?

If this was a sudden change and you have been using this engine recently I would check the head gasket. I would also check the water pump and thermostat as head gaskets generally go out from over heating.
