This engine has turned up out here on Vancouver Island. It's in sore need of George Coates 'baking and welding' treatment sadly. The original boat still exists locally and is being restored, it was built in 1914.

This is the only PNR 4 I know of. Rob is looking for the serial number tag. The engine photos Rob sent me indicate it was built in about 1925 as it has the disatrous gear water pump which caused so much damage to engines Palmer went back to the original plunger pump which had served so well for pumping small marine trash in the cooling seawater. The early piped version of the gear pump set up was from the pump to the bottom of the exhaust manifold. This meant any leakage past the pump inlet check valve and the exhaust maniifold would drain back exsposing the red hot exhaust pipe until the pump refilled the exhaust manifold with cold sea water. The first fix was to pipe from the pump to the top side of the exhaust manifold which worked after a fashion for some engine installations. It soon became necessary to revert to their standard plunger pump retaining the inlet pipe to top side of the exhaust manifold. This engine has the gear pump with the brass pipe to the top of the exhaust manifold which can be seen at the aft end of the exhaust manifold. This exhaust manifold is the 1938 so called 3 bolt manifold but the cylinders are for the 1925 two bolt exhaust. Palmer engines of the NR and ZR series work with either version manifold. This engine has a number of other interesting feature which I will try to comment on with photos at a later date. Rob sent me some very intersesting photos which are going to take a little time to review.

Dick, I just came across an email related to this thread, which made me look at it again. I don't mean to add to your "to do list", but did you ever have a chance to revisit those photos of this engine?
