Have a Palmer P-60 with direct drive in an Islander 30 sailboat. While motoring yesterday heard a noise from rear of boat like a clunk. Continued to slip to discover the reverse was not working properly....not much lever travel for reverse. Reverse seems to engage but not fully. Forward works as before. What are the possible causes? I will check oil level, cable function, and possible line on the prop shaft. I believe this is a direct drive Paragon OXB transmission. I am the original owner of 38 years...worked perfectly till now. Need advice...and thanks.

Reverse adjustment is pretty easy. As the reverse pad gets worn if may need tightening. The clunk May mean something else though. Browse through this message board, Dick Day has a great instruction on adjusting the rev gear. If you need more help email me and I will offer more.

Update for Paragon transmission problems.

The clunk was caused by the pin holding the brace to the reversing band coming out making reverse inoperable. The repair consisted of buying a pin repair kit from Moyer Marine. This kit has a tapered pin with a cotter hole...a much improved design. The repair can be made through the access opening on the top of the transmission. Just wanted to share...Moyer Marine has Paragon OXKB parts on their website. This the only source Icould findfor Paragon parts.
