Some of you may have seen the YT-2 on Harry's page, I was lucky enough to be the first to respond. Bob Price picked it up for me, I will see it at Mystic. Looks like it was removed from the boat and stored.

The serial number is 2159225. So I guess that means it was made in 1925.

And yes JB is coming to Mystic to get the Palmer and a three cylinder Syracuse that I picked up at the same time.

Cheers

Got home from the Mystic-Portland,IN trip late yesterday, caught up on some things today. Went to the shop late theis evening and took a look at the YT-2. At Mystic I oiled everything and turned it over, no compression on the front cylinder. I removed the head, when I took the exhaust elbow off it was stuffed by a pack rat or something. Looking at the engine you can see he had a long way to go to get up and over the exhaust pipe through the manifold and into the front head. I ground the valves and refaced the seats, oiled it up and reinstalled the head, cylinder looks great. Front cylinder now has better compression than the rear, will do the same to it. All of the bolts broke loose easily, unscrewed by hand after breaking. I don't know if it ever had a valve job but the valves didn't have a groove in them. The Bosch mag has fire on the rear cylinder, not the front. This would seem to be a problem in one of the towers, same points and coil for both cylinders. I'll have to take it down and investigate, never worked on one of these. If I can't fix it I'll have to send it to a mag shop.

I went to the shop early this morning, reworked the valves on the rear head, a little rust on the exhaust. I removed the mag after work, the points were sluggish to close, gummy grease. I cleaned and lubed them. Did a little studying, the engine is odd firing, 180 degrees, mag turns crank speed. There are two lobes for the points, 180 degrees apart, it fires every half turn. One spark is fired on the exhaust every other round and is wasted. The interesting thing is the impulse, it only works on the rear cylinder, once every round. One of these is firing the wasted spark. While I had the mag on the bench I connected two plugs and spun it by hand, it fired both plugs. It would be hard to crank it fast enough to get a spark without the impulse, it wil have to start on the rear cylinder every time. A little fuel in the primer cups got me a few pops, will have to try again when I have more time.

I've been running the YT2 for the last couple of days, it seems to be getting better as it runs. I'm cheating by starting with a 1/2" drill, compression is good but the mag is weak, probably a recharge would do it, but I think I'll send it off and have it re-worked, I would like to run this engine in my boat but it needs to be dependable.

Thanks Robert, the throttle is shut and it still runs a little faster than I'd like, will have to see if I can get it to seal better, that's why I loaded it up with the "brake". As for getting things done, I guess the secret is having too many projects, I don't feel like I'm doing enough, others ask how I manage to get all these things done.

My poor old YT-2 is missing the two 90 degree elbows that go between the engine and the exhaust manifold. The bolt pattern is such that the exhaust manifold will bolt directly to the engine without those 90's if an adapter is made for the discharge water (not enough clearance for a standard pipe fitting). Nevertheless, the 90's add a lot of character to the YT-2. I would like to buy or trade for a pair of these but even one would be great as I could have the other one cast.

The exposed push rod/rocker arm style engine seemed to largely disappear by, say, 1912 yet there was a revival of the style during the early 20's, witness the Gray Model O, Palmer YT-1 and YT-2, Knox Model G, and probably others. What did that style offer that triggered a revival, ease of construction, ease of repair, low cost to manufacture, etc.?

Searcher - if you can beg, borrow or steal one of those elbows, I can create a 3D model of it and then you could have one 3D printed to use as a pattern to get some castings made. You would also need some core pieces for the interior passages. Search on my post about the part I had made for my Niagara engine.

Thanks for that offer. I will pursue it with you if I don't find originals. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that some kind soul will remember that he has an extra pair of these elbows under a bench. This hobby has made something of an optimist out of me, I can think of at least four instances where I have found engines or parts for engines that I never believed I would find. I am learning in my old age that patience really is a virtue.
