My P60 starts and runs easily so long as I keep the rpms up, but when I try to slow to idle it dies. I discovered that if I partially close the choke, it will run at idle speeds. I've tried adjusting the idle mixture screw, with no effect. I just finished rebuilding the carb with all new jets, thinking maybe the idle jet or passage was clogged, but no change.
The scenario described applies to the engine when at normal operating temperature, with no load on. The engine dies whenever I put it in gear, which is probably another problem altogether. But I'm trying to solve one problem at a time. If I could get the idle problem fixed I'd be happy for now.
Could the fuel pump contribute to this? I replaced the fuel pump a couple of years ago while troubleshooting another problem with the engine. I didn't get the 2-3 PSI Facet pump from Moyer, but rather one of the Facet cube pumps. Seems to work fine and it fixed the earlier problem of the engine shutting off after a few minutes of running. But I'm pretty sure it's a higher pressure pump than the specified one. I can't see how that could cause a problem like I have, but then there's a lot I don't know about fixing these things.

Damn, I know what you're going through. I had a similar problem until I had the carburetor completely rebuilt by CarburatorUSA, but then we had to change the fuel water/separator, thought we had fuel filtering problem, but finally found a wizoned old tractor engine mechanic who just has a magical eye for tuning these damn tractor engines and figured it out. So voila, we just somehow worked through carb rebuilds. filtering issues and finally just finding an expert at tuning. I'm dying to repower the damn boat to diesel, but wow, that will be a pain. Hang in. It's frustrating.

David,
Thanks for the encouragement. I've been trying to get this motor right for almost five years. As soon as I fix one thing another unrelated problem crops up. I'd repower if I could afford to, but the boat's probably not worth that cost. Oh well, it's a lesson in persistence.

Over the years I've come to rely on expert rebuilding of carburators. I like to take it to a shop that specializes in fuel systems and let them rebuild it. It has always been money well spent. I can then go on and not be bothered by the carburator for years afterward.

Although my Palmer P60 now runs perfectly, I'm a little concerned about water in the oil. It seems when I start it up, it looks like mud or rust coming out of the exhaust water for a few seconds until it settles down. It's really running fine, seems to be perfectly tuned, and I'm hoping the milkiness will burn out of the oil, but still is a concern. Anybody know how water could be getting into the oil? We did blow a head gasket a few years ago, discovered some bent valves, and a badly rusted out head, which we replaced with an after market head we had to bore a hole in for the exhaust fitting.

If you are getting water in the crankcase oil it could be a blown head gasket, crack in cylinder head or crack in engine block. I don't know one way or other if that could also be from a defective exaust manifold but maybe another Palmer owner could help you with that.

David,
Until I put a gooseneck between the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe I used get water from the exhaust system back-siphoning into the upper combustion chamber, then down through the valve guides into the crankcase oil. Over time this led to sticking valves and ultimately rust damage to the valve seats requiring a valve job. Make sure youve got adequate vertical separation between manifold and exhaust pipe.

Rebuilding the carb is great but if the problem really is crud in the top of the float valve fuel inlet blowing compressed air into the inlet doesn't remove the crud on top of the valve. You have to have a short length of 1/8" or 1/4" copper tube so you can have the compressed air reach the bottom of the inlet and blow the crud back out of the inlet.
Otherwise you are just packing it in tighter.

Carlos;
more then likely it is a blown head gasket.

Also, for water in the oil check the water pump (remove and check if water leaks into the oil side).

For salt water use a cooper sandwich gasket. I get them custom made from Molina Gaskets in Torrance, CA.
