Anyone have a good schematic or photos to illustrate removal / replacement of P60 distributor? Is there any other equipment impacted if I take it off to allow easier access for working with the points and condenser? I am not getting spark and think it might be an issue with the distributor. Any other words of wisdom?

Hello Chip,

It is very unlikely that taking the distributor off will help solve this problem. But if you do, you will likely loose your timing when you re-install it.

Assuming that your points are in good condition and opening, and that your condenser is working, a simple coil change out might solve the problem.

I have also encountered the same problem from a missing insulator where the negative coil lead attaches to the distributor, allowing it to ground out to the case.

You might check for voltage on the open points and spark across the points.

If you still want to remove the distributor, it comes out easily, but re-timing the distributor with the engine is a bit of a problem.

There are parts diagrams on my website www.boatcityyachts.com

Good luck,

David

Thank you David! Do you happen to have the legends that go with the labels on the diagrams posted on your web site or know where I could find more detail about the illustrations?

Anyone care to share thoughts/experience with the Pertronix 1548 electonic ignition conversion kit?

Chip, points and condensers were intimidating to people unfamiliar with them even back in the day when that was the way all ignition systems were. Don't be. A few simple tips which you will get from this board will have you going in no time. Even if you opt to change to an electronic ignition I'd advise you diagnose this situation first so that you know where the problem was.
I agree with David. Don't pull the distributor out at this point.
First, how did this problem occur and did you change anything so far?

Thanks Eddie and Tim!

Will come back with more details after the holiday efforts if I don't get her running.

Hope everyone enjoys a wonderful weekend!

Got her running! Timing seems to be a few degrees before TDC based on timing light. She starts and runs smoothly in neutral but seems to die easily when I put her in gear. Thoughts?

I would enrichen the idle mixture and make sure the idle isn't set to low.

Another question about the distributor. When the flywheel notch is aligned to TDC, the rotor points to a particular post on the distributor cap that goes to the spark plug. I assumed this would be #1 and it would follow in the sequence 1-3-4-2. It starts and runs well in neutral this way so it seemed kind of right. However, I noticed today that a different position is marked 1 on the distributor. It is one quarter turn back so plug #1 would be where I have #2 currently. Is the label wrong or my original logic about the position of the rotor when flywheel is at TDC indicator?

It could be misfiring on one or more cylinders. In neutral a misfiring cylinder can go unnoticed. What did you change before you got it running ?

Chip,

The flywheel mark will be up for top dead center (#1) or bottom dead center (tdc #4). If the ngine runs, you have the right one.

The distributor doesn't really care which wire is in each hole, as long as the sequence it right. If you want to line up #1tdc with the one on the distributor, all you need to do is to pull out the distributor and turn the rotor 1/4 turn - and then re-insert it so that it lines up with the #1. Then move the wires to match.

Thanks for confirming, David. Makes sense to me.

Responding to Eddie's question:
1. Motor was running great before I had an unexpected absence of a little over a year.
2. The engine was not run for over a year.
3. Changed spark plugs, adjusted point gap, spark plug and coil wires.

How old is the distributor cap? Do you still have the old spark plug wires ?

Thanks again to all who helped. It is so awesome to have this vibrant community of P60 enthusiasts! She is running great now. I think it was a fuel issue. I used a bottle of STP carburetor cleaner and she is purring like a happy kitten now.

Now... On to the water pump issue illustrated in my other post.
