I am from south africa, and got hold of a PALMER Q1 type engine.(1 cyl 2 stroke)
Only missing its carburettor it is in a good condition.
What type of carburettor did it use?
What is the manufacturing year?
What was the HP rating?
Any one with more info please.
Thanks a lot

If you have the serial no. the last two digits are the year it was made. It was made from about 1906 until mid 1920s. There were a few changes. Up until about 1912 the timer was half way up the cylinder and then it was moved up to the top of the cylinder. Early units had the spark plug on the top side of the cylinder. about 1912 the spark plug moved to the top center of the cylinder. Early units used either the Palmer mixing valve or Schebler Model D carburetors. Some engines may be found with Kingston, Krice, Monarch or similar carburetors.
It was rated at 2 HSP at 550 RPM. weight 135. base width on early units 9" X 9". Sometime ca 1920 the base was widened to 10-1/4". The flywheel dia. in the 1907 catalog is 13", 1909 it is 14", 1912 and later 13". At least one Q-1 has a swing arm type timer and is a two port Q-1 could be 1906 or earlier. Apparently the Q-1 must have been preceded by a two port version and when the Q series was brought out Palmer used up the two port bases by putting three port cylinders on them. If I can be of further help give me a shout.

Thank You Richard
Old Marine engines like this are not known in south africa and even the vintage stationary engine clubs cant help me.

The nameplate are missing.
The Timer are near the top of the cylinder.

Please Explain 2port versus 3port.?
Theres an exaust port, a port where the carburetor
fits, and then a third port just above the carburetor that are blanked of.
What was this blanked off port for, its got a machined face with 2 mounting screws on each side?

Can I build a buzz box tipe ignition for it?
Its got a 2 part spark plug champion(X) situated top middle of the cylinder.

Please help with any literature, manuals on this type engine.

Gerrit, Andrew sells the Palmer Bros. handbook which covers the answers to your questions very throughly. I think that you would be wise to get a copy and then proceed from there. It explaines the differences among two port, three port and two/three port two cycle engines. The Ford buzz coil works very well with the Q and most of the watermen used them as they were cheaper than other brands.
