I have a Palmer P-60 with a blown head gasket. I got a new gasket for a Iternational tractor with a C-60 engine but my engine is raw water cooled in salt water. I remember Dick Day said something about using a copper gasket. Can those be obtained or do you have to make them? Also should I use copper gasket sealer on the gasket? I have the torque pattern and torque specs from a tractor manual but no other info.

I think you should fresh water cool if you expect the engine to keep going. The exhaust manifold will be almost impossible to replace and then you have a real problem. The tractor gasket won't stand up to salt water. I don't have any idea if copper gasket sealer will have any benificial effect on the tractor gasket.

Eddie and Dick,
I will forward this to Gil to see what his thoughts are. His wife does most of the "computing", but maybe he can post a response here.
Regards,
Andrew

Eddie and Dick,
Being a long user of the Gray 4-91, I have been in the same dilemma--I've used the industrial steel head gaskets which contain copper grommets. You might get two or five years northern life before the gasket corrodes through leaking salty into a cylinder. The copper also etches the surrounding iron away with electrolysis though. A non-hardening sealer is what I have used to extend the life potential. The Atomic four has a non-metallic gasket which largely explains why they have seen some long happy lives with raw-cooled engines(my friend's was 25years and still strong). Shutting the engine down each time on a few gallons of fresh water would be a major benefit for any raw water engine as most damage occurs between uses, not while running, despite higher temps.
The ultimate solution though is FWC which I did install. But there is need for additional pump, belt drive pulley, heat exchanger and in some cases additon of a proper bypass type thermostat. I used a 3" X 12" dual pass Sendure exchanger for this bigger engine with great success. This is a size used for the Atomic4. This cools both engine and exhaust manifold which is crucial for the Gray and the Palmer. Replacements manifolds may not be out there.

I have a palmer p-60 compleatly rebuilt but the boat has not been in the water in over 10 years.(Columbia 34 MK II) I have the opertunity to change to fresh water cooled now before the launch. What do I need? Where can I get it? How much time does it take? Thank you all in advance. I also have 3 spares for parts but no manifolds.

Bill,
I've got a Palmer P-60. Indigo Electronics makes an after market system for Atomic4s. You would have to jury rig a bracket for the added raw water pump as that part would only fit an Atomic4. The rest of it should work.

I will not be picking the motors up for a couple of weeeks but will keep you informed. Thank you Eddie and Ray for all the help off list

Matthew,
Did you follow the bolt tightening sequence? Did you check the head for flattness when it was off? Did you know that brand new cylinder heads are still being manufactured. I have a brand new one that I wound up not using if you are interested.

thanks eddie for responding. put the new gasket on but this time used a copper tacky spray and bolt seizing paste. tightened down 45lbs from center out. fire the motor and have water in the back cylinder. only one this time. I have good water coming out of the water pump. When i fire the moter that cylinger clears out of water and fires. shut the motor off and you can see water building in that cylinder. The head was cleaned off and it looked good. next should i have the head filed down, or take you up on the new one. any help is really great. thanks again.

Mathew, get a copy of the IHC Cub-LoBoy tractor manual from VALU-BILT Tractor Parts. www.valu-bilt.com or 1-888-828-3276. In their 2004 catalog it is listed as Intl Cub LoBoy order no. A1257542. Price $22.99 I don't know if that includes mailing. It is the IHC C-60 engine. Palmer converted many of these engines for marine purposes. It will tell you the critical material on the M-60 AKA P-60 engine. Don't talk Palmer to Valu-Bilt talk IHC Cub LoBoy not Cub Cadet, repeat not Cub Cadet that is an entirely different engine no way related to the C-60. They sell a lot of the engine parts, not marine parts for the C-60 engine.
