I have a Palmer 60 in my Columbia 28. I recently removed the alternator, coil, distributor, fuel pump and wiring and repainted the engine block. Prior to doing this the engine ran great under all circumstances. Since replacing all the components it starts great idles perfectly at 800 rpm and accelerates and runs great up to 3000 rpm, just like it used to, as long as it is not under load. When the transmission is engaged - in reverse it will max out at 2000 rpm and when in forward it max's out at 1800 rpm. It doesn't cut out but just will not rev any higher. No changes were made to the carb or point settings. I am perplexed as to what could be causing the poor performance under load.

Check the plug firing order would be my first thought.

The timing whent off when you removed the disrtibutor. Reset the timing. Check point gap (dwell ).

I thot more about it Doug and it obviously sounds like the timing is to advanced causing the ping and power loss, essentially you're firing before both valves are closed. Try retarding the distributor a little.

Thanks Richard, Eddie and Robert - Robert I will be down at the boat tomorrow and will re-set everything like we spoke of this morning. I will try to advance it first and then if that doesn't work I will start at the begining and double check all the settings. I will let you know what happens. Thanks for your help.

I went ahead and replaced the points, cap, and rotor. Set the points and repositioned the distributor - I had origionally set the distrubutor in place as though it was a counter clockwise rotation so the points were off by about 15 degrees. Runs great now though it does ping a little if I try to run it full throttle in gear. Thanks for the help.

There are posts that state how to set the timing correctly. I would take a look at them and see if you have not set the timing too far advanced.

If it is pinging the timing is too far advanced. Back the distributor until the pinging stops. Then it should be just right.

>I have also seen them ping when they are over heating This is just before they seize up. Pinging is the warning you get before expensive happens, Take the time to check it over now. Roger on the west coast
