Richard Durgee has sent in a write-up on Gray Motor Company Serial number identfication. Before posting it in a "permenant" location on the site he suggest that we post it here for feedback.

See: Gray Motor Serial numbers

... sorry about how some of the text has wrapped... I will fix that when we finalize it.

Thanks Richard, this sort of thing makes a lasting contribution to the hobby!

Editor's note on Dec. 19, 2002: Richard has submitted a revised list for review, here is the link to the "version 2" page. I will also post a new message at the end of this thread, but I thought it might be usefull to have the link to the revision here too.

Oops, did you mean incomplete serial number, or incomplete engine? I will go out to the shed and see if I can find a few more numbers.

first a correction. the engine I have listed as 06R2922 does not have an oiler as listed, it does have a detroit standard gear tranny.

the picture was switched with 04S3349, a model s with detroit driven oiler and tranny. this one is not on the list.

engine number 010s724 is a 10 hp model S. it should be on the s list, not the r list

engine 010R1371 is a stationary model R 10 hp single. it is not on the list.

engine S12296 is a model s, single, not on the list.

engine 3U2835 is a model U single, not on the list

engine 26U10911 is a model u twin, not on the list.

now that I have found where the serial number is stamped on the flywheel, I should be able to find it on a few more.

Bill,
I'll make the adjustments to the list and add the new numbers and any others that come in and resend the new list to Andrew to post next week.
=
On eng 010s724-- not sure what the small s denotes? if eng has nut on shaft then it should be a 1920 and model S was not made after 1913 ??
then its an R ??? need some feed back ??
=
on eng 3U2835 it could be a 1912 waterpump front
or 1922 aft pump ??
we'll get it sorted out !

I have no doubt that 010S724 is a model S, it has hp listed as 10S, and it was equiped with a pulley drive oil pump. it has a nut on shaft.

you can compare the nametag to this model R one.

Grayinfo

By 1914 catalog only the R model with no oilers

From what I've seen of the Miss River, seems "MUD"
would have been a better word than "SAND"

But, at the time the river was not dammed. My grandfather lived on a Mississippi backwater, and before the dams, it was a wonderful spring fed lake with sandy bottom. All the mud went down river in the spring floods. after the 1937 dam went in, it was a mud hole. also, the clammers would have been in sandy areas, I think. I have a scientific america somewhere that talks about it.

Intersting observation - my serial number is stamped on the body of the cylinder directly. Others have the serial number on a brass plate - I wonder when THAT change occurred?

Richard, My Gray 2 cycle single is #11 057, The upper case "S" is stamped above the space between the 11 and the 057. This S/N is stamped in the cylinder casting on a flat machined boss above the intake. If there was a gib key; it was cut off flush with the flywheel hub. The timer rides atop the Orberdorfer water pump behind the flywheel. #1269 is cast on the face of the flywheel along with the Gray logo.

I have another single cyl. Gray if you want to add to the list. It has nut on flywheel, and water pump up front on timer shaft. Serial # on flywheel is 3U27407. It is so cracked up and so many parts missing that I think I will make a mailbox post ornament with it.

I'll report any info.It's a Model R and either
a 1911 0r 1915 ?? BUT NOT 1906 as claimed !

For the last 10 years i've had a deep sea diving helmet painted on my mail box, But after seeing
yours with the( real thing) i'm thinking of a decor change. Best of 2003 Richard

Have just started working on a Gray that has been in storage - in my family since 1927. I originally mistook the casting numbers for the serial numbers Now have located the serial numbers and have a very clear read on them. 5 - 1/2 U 26110 stamped into the rim of the flywheel. We got it to fire one time today, everything seems to be there. Would appreciate any advice or info that is available.

I'll have to check the serial number on the 2-cylinder, horizontally opposed Gray I have.
