I just bought a Gray Marine 4 cylinder on Ebay, but the owner doesn't know what it is and I don't either. If you can tell by looking at pictures, could someone go to Ebay #4545610681 and tell me what they think it is. Also it does not have a carb on it. Would it be a Zenith M63 or a Carter BB-1

Here is the link.

Mick: I guess there is no nameplate on the engine... or information the cover of the transmission?

Mick
It looks like a 4-162 to me. Both of those carbs will fit. I
guess it depends on how fast you want to go.

As far as I know there is no nameplate on the engine and I cannot see anything on the tranny. Mind you I am only looking at the pics just like you. I will not see the engine in the flesh for at least a week. If it is indeed a 4-162, what would the specs be including rpm's, what years would it have been made and about how much horsepower would it have with either of the two carbs?

Also, my boat plans which are from 1924 call for a Gray Marine Model "Z" or similar up to 50 HP and 600 lbs. What are the specs for a Model "Z". I can't find any references to it anywhere.

I agree it looks like a continential. You should be able to find CWC and F00 3u as casting marks. In tractors they were listed as 32hp @ 1800rpm.In other places you see much higher numbers like 60hp @ 3600 rpm.Grey used this engine in differant series with differant rpm's.

I believe Graymarine used this continental block from roughly the late 30's to the early 60's or whenever they went out of buisness. The Whole Gray range was based on several basic blocks that were offered in Lugger, Fireball, Phantom, etc. state of tune. The Lugger 162 would make 42hp @ 1800; while the Phantom would make 75 @ 3600. My research( based on replacement part numbers) indicates that the only differences between the models were in carburation, exhaust manifold and ignition, not in the basic block. I have seen references to a racing model that makes 95 hp @ 4000 rpm. The 162 in my sailboat loafs along at 1600 and makes around 22hp based on fuel usage. Hope this helps

I also have had some difficulty finding out what engine I have. I have a Gray Marine diesel engine package on a mount. The brass information plate is in great shape, so I know the following info: Model no. 4D157, engine no. F7402.

I need a shop manual for this marine engine package. What make of engine is it? Other than the fact that its a 4 stroke per cycle diesel engine, I am in the dark here. Its got the marine reduction gear and it runs, but has an oil gallery problem resulting in crankcase oil getting into the fuel injection pump after a minute of normal running.

Please help me with information or direct me to someone who can.

4D157 is allso a continential diesel number.Alot of the old diesel injector pumps had parts of them lubbed by engine oil.I could probably find out which pump you have with some more looking later. The 2 oils are seperated by seals and it depends which side has the higher preasure when the seal goes bad as to which way the it flows. On farm engines the fuel useally goes into the oil.

Continental GD157 dsl engine (GD157A500 is stamped in starboard side of engine block): The fuel injection pump is American Bosch PSB4A-70FH-5349A1, spd 600/2000, serial no. 7D20418, ? no. 157F244.

The problem is: Crankcase oil enters the fuel tank after a short period of good running, then the engine runs rough.

Need specific diagnostic advice.

Larry:

Thank you for looking for the pump problem/fix. I ordered a Continental GD157 Service manual. If its the manual I need, maybe this specific problem is discussed in it.

Otherwise, if upon looking at the pump manual you come up with an idea on where exactly the oil mixing would likely occur, please post it here.
