I am just finishing restoration of a 4hp Acadia. I think it is an early one. There is no ID plate but the numbers 76 and 4 are stamped on the cylinder where the water pump mounts on. I guessing 4hp #76 but no year.

There is no drip oiler with this engine nor any oil inlet on the cylinder. I assume then it is splash lubricated from the crankcase. If so, does anyone know how much oil would be recommended or have an operating manual that says how much? If it isn't splash lubricated, is it possible early Acadia engines without drip oilers required an oil/gas mixture? Thanks for your help.

Just run it on 16 to 1 pre mix
To keep it simple I run the same ratio as my vintage outboards. 1 qt of 30W non detergent oil to 6 gallons of gas.
Don't add oil to the crankcase
Hope this helps

I thought I'd post some pictures of the Acadia 4hp that I've been restoring this winter. It's pretty much there. Thanks to Ernie and Charles for their help answering some questions I had. I will run it. I'll have to move it outside when the weather is better. I'm just making sure the water jacket is fine. It had been salt water cooled and sat for more than 10 years. There wasn't any water in it but I want to make sure the water jacket and cylinder are okay and will withstand the compression when it starts. I've flushed it and no rust came out. There were no leaks into the cylinder while watching with the exhaust and intake manifolds off. I'm pretty sure it will be okay. I will take the prop off and secure the stand probably with sandbags before I start it!

I'm posting pictures as well because it is always helpful to see pictures of other engines when you are working on one. They either answer some questions you may have had or give suggestions. Thanks to the forum and other forum members who have posted pictures.

The mount the engine is on is a modified engine mount from Princess Auto. I got the coil new from the Lunenburg Foundry around 1991 in anticipation of running the 7.5 Acadia engine on my property used for hauling boats up the slip way. I did get that running. The link to a Youtube video of it is on a posting below.

Thanks again to this wonderful forum for helping me keep a couple more of these wonderful engines alive.

Daryl,
Thanks for the pics. Nice work!
The Acadia engines really run nice. I have had a 3 hp for over 20 years and don't run it much. But when I do it usually starts on the first bump. I just got a 4 hp that I think is maybe one of the last made. Real high SN and never been if salt water by the looks of it. I will post some pics in a few days. It may even have original paint.

New guy here...I picked up a Acadia 4 and plan on getting it going. Always like to see them at the fairs here in Ontario. I never saw a marine motor before I got this one. Thanks Daryl for posting the pictures of your restoration.I see the coil that you have beside it.Will I need something like that to get mine running? If anyone has any links or helpful ideas of what to watch out for to get mine going would be very helpful..
I think its never seen salt water and has been in a barn with oil inside it most everywhere.Found a nut in the exhaust pipe..lol

Hi Dean,

You will need a coil. I got that one more than 20 years ago from the Lunenburg Foundry. I don't think they offer them anymore. You can check ebay or perhaps other members know where to access one. You can use the coil with a Ray-O-Vac dry cell battery. I got one of those at Home Hardware many years ago and have run a stationary 7 1/2 hp Acadia engine with it.

Best of luck with the restoration. It sounds like you have a good candidate for restoration.

Hi Daryl
That was a quick reply..thanks. I just took off the spark relay ass. and cleaned it.Did you fill your water jacket to check for leaks? That was what I was going to do that next just to check if it needs anything else. Usually when you see a dual hp rating it's for different rpm's, like 4 @ 800, 3 @ 600, generally marked on the tag. The engine looks new. You can use a flourescent light ballast for a coil, one of the heavy magnetic type, not the lightweight electronic kind. It doesn't have to be a good one, I've used the one's I've removed not functioning. Use the black and white wires, cut the rest off. Connect it in series with a battery and the ignitor. Ground the battery to the engine. To test rotate the engine until the ignitor closes, drag the wire across the terminal of the ignitor, it should draw a nice arc as it comes off.

No problem at all Dean. I wanted to say I did flush my water jacket to make sure it is clear and salt-free. You've got an excellent looking engine there. Great to see another Acadia engine well looked after. Best of luck with it.

Daryl
