I am trying to figure out a value for a motor I have. it is a 6hp Acadia never used still in its original crate, it was shipped complete from the factory with several other crates containing (I believe)everything required to install it into a boat, drive shaft, gas tank, muffler, thru hull fittings, packing, cooling pipes, coil, spare make and break unit and lots of other stuff, etc. etc. As I said, all parts were shipped with the motor from the Acadia factory.

ultimately I would like to sell this motor and would appreciate any input I can get, it is located in Ontario.

Hi Robert
here are some pics of some of the included parts, I will try to get some of the motor itself today, it is very heavy, in a dark corner and crated so not so easy to get good ones.
thanks for asking

As I said its not easy to photo the motor due to the crate but I moved it out into the sunlight and did the best I could without prying the wood open. I see that the "6" is not actually stamped on the plate in the correct "hp" field(where nothing is stamped)so I suppose the 6hp claim could be debatable. on the other hand you can see the other serial numbers have dimpled the plate and the 6 has not, implying that the 1579 was hand stamped and the 6 at a different time. Also you can see on the shipping tags that the shipment was made the 22 of August 1972.

Enjoy
Gord

Wow!! Yes, a real museum piece!

In some ways it would be a shame to disturb the crate and the unused condition, yet it would sort of also be a shame to simply leave it unused. A conundrom,.....

I'd love to let it sit next to my 5 hp Acadia, but it is outside my budget.

Can you give us the serial number? I can't quite make it out and I would like to add it to the Acadia serial number list.
Thanks
Ernie

Ernie, I think "1579" was indicated above. Probably just further indicating that Acadia S/N's mean absolutely nothing. lol

Hi its Gord Hicks, sorry but I seem to be having a problem with my account and I am locked out so Im posting this way

please disregard my earlier mention of the 1579 because on closer examination I believe the serial number to be 4579,,,,or possibly 45796,,,as you can see though,,,the 6 at the end is stamped differently and I think it is the HP designation.

Hi,
Can you get us the diameter of the flywheel and the overall height of the engine?
From looking at the pics I think this is a 4 HP and not a 6 HP.
I can determine the HP from the dimensions above.

I think the SN is 45796.
I have 45831 SN on the list confirmed as a 1976 engine, so 45796 fits for the date on the shipping crate.
The difference of 35 engines show that Acadia was still manufacturing them but not many in the last years of production. I think production ended in the early 80's

I found a file full of goodies today and can confirm that the serial number is actually the full 45796, also that this motor is indeed a 4hp as you thought Ernie. I knew I had this file of course but haven't looked in it in years. I'm in the process of moving and things are all over the place. Included in it are original sales receipts, shipping documents, correspondence with the factory regarding this order, users/parts book/ business cards, you name it, even boat plans for an appropriate Dory.
Total cost for this setup in 1972 including taxes (and I think shipping) came to $611.44

To All,
I love it when history becomes reality. Enjoyed this post and the possibility of a early style engine meeting a current marine project.

Great photos, thank you! This deserves a full montage hosted somewhere on this site I would suggest.

What are the markings on top of the carburetor please?

Is the muffler cast by Acadia also and any markings on that?

I stand corrected, apparently this S/N has some logic to it. That makes me wonder more about the logic of the S/N on my 5hp (# 55).

Thanks Ernie for consulting with Andrew to sort out my account problems.
I also stand corrected, on closer inspection I see that the order cost of $611.44 was definitely "FOB" Bridgewater, meaning the cost of shipping was not included in that figure.
Curiously though, a shipping receipt is not found elsewhere in these otherwise complete files. I would love to know how much that cost though, Im sure it would be a small fortune today.

Robert, I will have a closer look at the carb and muffler to answer your questions regarding them. I might be several days to respond as my internet will go out tonight until an as yet undetermined restart date.

Ned,

I don't think there is any logic to the 2 digit Acadia serial numbers.

I have seen too many duplicates on engines of different HP.
My list so far has 3 engines with the SN of 60.
A 5 HP a 6 HP and an 8 HP.

So the only logical thought I can come up with is an employees piecework number.

Hi Gord ...I am originally from Cobourg Ont. I am now in Nova Scotia. Have you determined a price on this motor yet. I currently have an Acadia 5 hp but would like to set up another boat with a make and break.
