Hi, I'm JOdy. Among a group of antique gas engines that was purchased months ago, there was a Kermath engine that came with a group. It is a 4 cyl. #13637. It looked like it may have been painted blue. I was recommended by Rich Langtry to come to this sight. Anyone know the history of the Kermath?

Thank you very much, JOdy

Jody,

A lot of multi-cylinder Kermath engines are still in use in vintage Chris Craft and other runabouts and utilities. There is literature information on the engines available. You will need to detirmine what model of Kermath engine you have. Among the 4 cylinder models were the:
  • 20
  • 35
  • 50
  • Sea-Cub
  • Sea-Bird
  • Sea-Dog

If you can supply the engine displacement, or bore and stroke... we can probably identify what engine you have.

Regards,
Andrew

I have a Kermath Marine Engine I am trying to get some history, specifications, etc. for. It is a Ford or Mercury Flathead V8 Kermath Conversion (from the '40s??). It has a lot of marine features such as marine manifolds, aluminum oil pan, vertical starter drive, and a Kermath transmission.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Jim

A lot of the inline Kermath engines were based on Hercules blocks.... but I don't think that the V-8 was. A quick look at some if the Kermath information that I have reveals only one V-8 which seemed to be refered to as a model "V-8". It was 90HP at 3600RPM and 221 cid.... but I am not sure what block it was based on. Anyone else...???

This Kermath V-8 was based on a Ford flathead V8 of the 1946 vintage and newer. They also used this engine in a version called the Kermath Screwball. The engine was mounted on end and drove an underwater unit that was mounted through the bottom of the boat. The entire engine swiveled for steering, much like an outboard. Hope this helps.

I have a Kermath Model "Sea Jeep" 61 H.P. engine in an antique boat I purchased. I have the orginal manuals, it's an L.Head, 4 Cylinder, 3 1/8" bore, 4 3/8' stroke, piston displacement 134.2 cu. inch. I live near Toronto, Canada and want to have this engine rebuilt. Are you aware of any rebuilders in this area. Also any other information you have on these engines. Thanks, Joe

I have a Kermath Sea Jeep Highspeed. Unfortunately the boat it came in did not include any manuals or othe rmaintenance documentation. Can some help me with what is the oil capacity w/filter change? What is the meaning of the extra mark above the "full" mark on the dipstick?

I am not sure which engine you have, but alot of the old herks had the word FULL hand stamped between the 2 marks.Sometimes full ends up being closer to the add line than the full line. The top line is the full mark and the lower one is ADD.On one engine i have it took several long looks and a check of the manuel.

Hello Andrew and Kermath owners every where. I also am looking for manuals for a Sea Cub and a Sea Jeep. You mentioned that info was available. Can u direct me to it?
My Sea Jeep s/n is 3061J50 and the tag says Kermath Canada Ltd. Toronto. The Sea Cub s/n is 650251 Code ZXBM ZX. Kermath Mfg Co.Detroit Michigan. The code might have something to do with the clutch which has a reduction gear so it takes a left hand prop. The Sea Cub needs a starter and generator. Thanks all

To Lary from Maryland.
The Kermath Sea Jeep Highspeed is a marine conversion of the Willy's "Jeep" L-head 4 cylinder engine from the Willy's Jeeps (M38, CJ-2B, etc.). It is not a Hercules engine conversion. (I believe it was derived from a Continental engine.) My problem is that there are three (3) marks on the dipsick -from bottom to top: "ADD", "FULL", and unlabled. At "FULL" the engine only took 3 quarts including the filter. Obvisouly too little. In a JEEP with no filter the sump holds four (4) quarts. The filter - when equipped - another quart.

You may have a replacement dipstick that someone added a higher mark to when they realized the oil leval was too low.

I am looking to find info and pictures, if available for a Kermath Sea-Prince. It is a flat head six and I believe originally rated at 95 H.P.
My dad had a boat in the early to mid 50's that was powered be a "Sea-Prince". Any info that might be available would be greatly appreciated.

I am working on a 1931 Chris Craft 17' Split Cockpit Runabout that has been repowered with a 6-cyl Kermath. Numbers on the manifold read QX-4703 with BI below and .25MO below that. On the port side of the engine just aft of the flywheel is C 57 with 46505E below and CWC below that.

I have Kermath and Hercules manuals through Gil Plumb at marine engines.com and have checked a variety of other sources and all show QX-3 and QX-5. No QX-4.

If anyone has any info regarding what I may have, it will be appreciated.

I finally got my Kermath Sea Jeep Fisherman started in my basement prior to installing it in the new boat I am building. Unfortunately I got water in the oil which I have determined is coming from the tubes in the oil cooler. I bought what I thought was a new one, ( Groco RV-20-375 TB ),but when I opened the package today I found that it was rebuilt and very poorly done at that. Some of the tubes were plugged and solder had washed over the outside from both ends. The unit is bronze and is in a prominent place in front of the engine. And though the #'s are the same it is shorter than my original. Anyone have one I can buy? Bill

Hi, while going through my fathers shop I ran across a Kermath engine, I took a picture of the data plate, it says it's a model 8 10 HP,
Serial number 39648. I have no idea what this engine is for but suspect it came out of an old boat he restored some years ago. I was hoping someone can tell me something, anything, about this engine. Thanks!}

Jeannie - yep it probably did come from his boat. I have a bunch of old Kermath catalogs dating back to 1922 so I may be able to identify it. Could you post a port and starboard side picture to help. And if you have trouble posting the pictures, send them to me and I will do it.

Cheers
