Hiya. I need to remove the cylinder head of my R3M I'm doing up as the water cooling jacket is full of gunge and won't let any water through. After a night of WD40 the cylinder head nuts all came off fine. However as yet no joy freeing the copper gasket.

First efforts tapping with a piece of wood and hammer on the lugs either side had no impact. I'm loathe to go for the manual's second option of loosening the head nuts and starting the engine. Does anyone have any tips (particularly given that the water jacket is probably completely rusted up)? Has 'loosen nuts, start engine' worked safely for anyone, should I spray a load of plus gas into the water outlet?

Again, any ideas much appreciated...

Hi there.

On some earlier S-T engines (eg N type) the head was deeply spigotted into the bore making it very difficult to remove once a bit of carbon had accumulated. Listed amoungst the special tools for these engines was a "head lifter". Now I have never seen the genuine S-T version, but surmised that a sturdy piece of plate attached to the head by the spark plug thread and with hollow ended jack bolts around the edge to push on the head studs would do the job - with a bit of persuasion, it did!

I've never tried this on an R, and one problem I could see is that it might tend to lift the head and block as a single unit (the N block is cast integral with the crank case) could be worth a try though.

the water jacket cover should be easy to remove with a couple of metal wedges and should find all surfaces are flat so you can clean off with a scraper if you have trouble with the head try removing the studs through the head and twist the whole block
if you need spares including the water cover talk to fairways marine
