Hiya,

I was asked this question a while back and as I've finally got the my boat in the water, I'm able to say that the little R3M engine in the launch I've been restoring the last year or so kicks out plenty of oomph. I reckon she gets her going to a good 3 or 4 knots. She even keeps up pretty well with Mum's 10 horse diesel in a 14 footer. She did have a 0.1" rebore in the sixties so perhaps that's upped the power that little bit.

If you are interested, there's a video of the very first start and run here (with expert commentary by my cousin):

Reliability-wise, the engine needs a little more cleaning. I had a rusty fuel tank that's now much better after a second blast of cleaning, although I think I now need to clear the carb jet as she's taken a bit of choking to start for the last few runs.

Oh, one small thing, if anyone in London or Devon has a spare starter handle kicking about I'd be v grateful if you could get in touch. I'm using the gear stick to start her up at the mo which gives some nice blisters!

Hope you enjoy anyway.

Ben

thanks for the comments guys. I'm on the river dart and we actually got a mention at the dartmouth regatta this year which was pretty special (although we were being towed at the time as the engine had conked out). The announcer then went on to say how quaint it was that for centuries these men who coulnd't read or write but could build boats! huh!

You can download a free version of quicktime from Download.Com click here Use quicktime 7.1.3

I just down loaded it to this PC which didn't have it and I can now watch the video on both of my PC's.
Hope this helps
Ernie
