Hi Folks
We have a P66 D 10 hp engine which pushes a 28ft keeler yacht -a Townson 28.I have got alot of help in the past from this site. The engine has been going very well for ages.We have a good local mechanic who had it running really well.
However, lately the engine has been "reving" (ie without the throttle being touched....)and not pushing forward...ie looses forward thrust even while in gear.....This makes it hazardous coming into our marina berth as you can imagine. Is there soemthing I can check or ask our mechanic to check...we are going to ask him to tune the engine again.Any thoughts and suggestions would be most welcome..... just in case we get a summer here in Wellington NZ cheers

Hello Jennifer,

Sounds like the Drive Cone on the end of the Crankshaft that drives the Gearbox may be worn out. The P66D has a band of Fibre and Sintered Bronze on the drive cone that gives a smooth engagement when you select forward gear. If you are in the habit of just slipping the gear lever in and not fully engaging it when docking etc then this wears the cone out. Just remove the gearbox and you will see the cone. Get your mechanic to check it out. No need to dismantle the whole engine. The effect that you are getting is the drive "slipping" and this let's the motor rev without going anywhere fast.
Hope this helps,

Dave
