Well, after another session of trying to start our p55 i loosened the crankcase plugs and to my horror grey milky water and oil ran out of both plugs, no wonder she was getting harder to start.
My dad and i then made the decision to start to pull the motor down, we removed the head and then the cylinder block.
The engine had previously been running the weekend before at Davistown .
We discovered that the cooling water channels were very rusty but not blocked, what did attract our attention was the bottom end of the motor did have traces of rust on crankshaft lobes.
We also noticed that the studs of the no1 and no2 cylinders were quite rusty and the top of the case and bottom of the cylinder showed signs of rust, we think that the head gasket has given way and allowed water to travel down the studs and then into the crankcase.
Another strange thing was that the expansion chamber was lined with a thick oily muck and not with dry carbon like deposits that i have thought should have been there.[ we run a water lift muffler about two feet down the exhaust,is this causing this?].
Any help or advice would be great as my dad is starting to look around for blaxlands, but after seeing the engineering close up of these engines i want to see this through and get her back together and running again.

We are making rapid progress with getting our p55 back together , does anyone have any thoughts on the the water lift muffler? is it to close to the exhaust outlet?.

I use a waterlift exhaust system and have not experienced problems although the waterlift does need to be low down to stop any run back to the engine. My expansion chamber does not have dry carbon in, it's always oily which I think is normal. Having said that it is not thick sludge but just an oily surface. It doesn't seem to create much carbon deposit.

If cooling water was running down the studs and getting in to the crankcase it means you must have had a bad seal not only at the cylinder head but also at the block / crankcase interface. I did read somewhere that a lot of people when they are rebuilding do not take enough account of making sure all these joints are good and experience problems but again it is not one I have had - yet.

Your pictures of the head and block show them in what I would call pretty good condition - if you were on this side of the world I would try to talk your dad into getting a Blaxland and then giving me the bits of ST to take care of for you!

Neil, my email at work has been down, we have a manual thanks for the offer though. This weekend we will be putting both our engines together again and all going well the one in the boat and the spare will fire up,
by the way, does anyone know about different water pump capacities, our two pumps seem to have different cams, which therefore allow more or less travel for the plunger.?
