After using my 1951 boat in the sea which is powered by a restored 1961 R3M , I flush through with fresh water then lastly modern radiator coolant which I then leave in the block. This is to try to prevent the very bad flaking corrosion which had occured prior to restoration. I run fresh water through again before operating on any waterway to prevent this ethylene glycol causing any pollution. Am I wasting time or is this a good idea?

Hi Frances,
It is an ideal solution to an on-going problem.
The coolant will not harm the motor in any way and also provides a means of keeping the Oxygen (air) out so that corrosion cannot take place.
Keep doing it.

Dave

Thanks Dave,
I will keep leaving coolant in block after each trip . Its simple to do and hopefully will ensure another 50 + years of life for the motor!
Frances.

Hi Dave and Frances, Castrol make A very good corroision inhibitor available in 200ml bottles as a
concentrate,I mix this at 1 bottle/10 ltrs water
to flush my engine in "Puddle". I think it costs
around $4 a bottle(retail)
PS: Dont throw the bottles(plastic Flask) away as
they make great water proof containers for spare plugs, grease, nuts and bolts etc( ie 3 champion 25 series
plugs Comfy fit)
Look forward to seeing you at Taree Dave
