i have just been given an unrestored p55, it seems to have a keyhole shape cut in the side of it, i assume its not meant to be there or is it a crankcase breather or something? |

Matt a bit more info would help ,better still an image. There is no breather ,its all part of the two stroke cycle. The only opening to the crankcase is the carburetor mounting but this is not irregular nor is it key hole shaped . |

Do you think it might have suffered some internal derangement and a part tried to get out? Is the hole regular? Does it look machined or punched out and are there any cracks visible? Is it in line with one of the con rods? The poor thing wouldn't run without good crankcase compression. Sorry I couldn't open the picture. |

Matt, If my memory serves me correct all P55s have that hole in the bottom of the crankcase casting... if you look closely it doesent actually lead to the inside of the crankcase, it is just a part of the external casting. The two halves of the bottom of the crankcase are effectively separated by the centre bearing (rotary valve assembly). The hole only goes into a cavity in the casting, not the crankcase. |

Matt ...if the hole that you are talking about is as Chris describes then you have no problems .....it is part of the casting and does nothing as far as the running of the engine goes.
