Hi,

We have just taken ownership of a boat with a Stuart Turner P5 engine in (might be a P5M, but I'd need to check).

Turning the flywheel by hand seems to turn the prop shaft ok when in gear, with a slight resistance at one point which feels like the compression part of the cycle.

The electric start mechanism also seems to work ok, turning the flywheel as previously described.

The hand start mechanism however seems to be seized, so I imagine the fly wheel will need to come off to get at the part where the chain hooks up to the main shaft?

Can anyone suggest/advise as to what I should do to get this engine running?

I'd rather not have to take it out of the boat and strip it down fully if that is likely to cause more problems than it will solve, but equally if the consensus is that it should be stripped down to ensure all is well, then I guess thats the route to take.

Thanks in advance!

Can you turn the hand crank the other way?, if you cant it is the chain or the hand cranks shaft that is seized,
Also check the springs on the spawl to see if they are engaging it.
On the starting matter, put fuel in, check you have spark and give it a whirl, if she wont start check the timing if she still wont start do a search on this site and i am sure you will find some advice that will help you, you are only at the beginning of your Stuart journey.
Matt.

Remember, this is a 2-stroke ands requires oil in the gas. Right?

Matthew:

I put the crank on the other end of the shaft which I believe will turn it the other way, but to no avail - even after soaking as much of the chain and the bit behind the flywheel as possible in wd40.

Is it a complicated job to remove the flywheel to get access to the stuff behind there, or advisable?

Fuel wise I need to reconnect the engine to a fuel supply first and also give it some water to drink from for the cooling side of things.

John:

Yep noted, although I'm not sure of the correct mix or octane of the fuel - no manual :/

Hi,if you are left with no other option than a strip down , then i would seriously think about where you get youre spares from before you start as not everybody who owns a stuart is aware of the fairways marine situation and the lack of spare parts , i managed to aquire a complete gsket set AND A TIN OF PAINT for my P5ME from them before the company folded recently.I hope this hasnt put a dampener on things for you but i havnt read anything on this forum which would suggest that there is an alternative source of spares available to stuart owners. regards steve.

Steven,

Thank you for your reply; I wasn't aware of this situation, and can find barely anything online about it - have they actually folded or are they still trying to find a buyer?

Thanks.

Hi, miah
thanks for the reply ,i tried to contact fairways on several occasions to place another order but got no reply, i then contacted a friend of linda pickop (recent owner of fairways)at lake stern gear and he told me that they had indeed folded and no one else had taken the company on so unless we can find a contact number for the person who buys the stock at aution, spares will spares will become as rare as hens teeth, regards steve.

Mike> thanks for the link, much appreciated.

Steven,

I've been wondering whether theres any chance to save anything to make sure it doesn't disappear forever. I personally can't really do much with castings etc but I could look after the documentation side of things.

Maybe an opportunity for a 'stuart turner owners association'? :-)

/me gets coat.
