Hi,

We are in the process of trying to overhaul our P5M and get it running again.

Having cleaned up the water pump mechanism it is now moving water (quite slowly), however we will need to replace some of the gaskets as they are in poor condition.

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for gaskets or gasket material, since fairways are no more?

We put the engine back together yesterday to check the electrical system out, and although we managed to get a few isolated bangs and once got two bangs together, it doesn't seem ready to start.

The fuel is suspected to be quite old so will need replacing, but does anyone have any suggestions for what type of fuel we should feed it? Is unleaded from the local petrol station the answer with some lead replacement additive, and some 2 stroke oil mixed in?

hello miah, glad to hear you are making progress with youre P5, the old fuel should be disposed of and new fuel of 50 parts of petrol TO 1 OF SEA 30 OIL mixture ( the same as the oil in the gearbox) should get the old girl going. good luck

hello
i use normal unleaded in mine. i bought a litre of 2stroke oil(for outboards)and it runs fine.
Gaskets are a bit of a problem. make most myself with gasket paper from a auto shop but dont know where you'd find a head gasket from!
completely take the carb out, strip it down and clean it thoroughly, change the gearbox oil(i put a small squirt of oil in the sparker hole put the plug in and 'dry cranked' it for a while to loosen her up a bit(will smoke a bit when it starts) check timing and new plug and you should be fine.

Two strokes do not req. a lead substitute (no valve seats to burn).
Modern two stroke oils better bet than straight 30.
Make sure you have correct plug gap.
Re head gasket I use a mesh reinforced steam gasket material for my stationary engines.Not had a failure yet.
You can have them made(expensive for a one off)

I must admit I've never bought any (I used to have a source of free supply).
However the Trade name is "KLINGERITE" .
I did a quick Google and found this UK supplier

You should be able to find a supplier local to you in Yellow pages.
Buy a decent wad punch for forming the stud holes and a cold chisel sharpened to almost a knife edge and tin snips for the rest.Take care marking out and remember the old saying "measure twice cut once"

Thanks for all the info and encouragement folks, much appreciated - I've never rebuilt an engine before so I hope you'll bear with me through my no doubt obvious questions!

I'm reticent to disturb the head gasket unless I really have to, as replacing it will be a bit of a pain, but..

Any thoughts on what might be causing a loss of compression when you manually turn the flywheel through to the compression point in the cycle, and whether this is likely to be a show stopper?

WRT to stripping down the carb I have managed to disassemble pretty much everything except for the part where the carb is mounted to the block; the brass screw is proving very stubborn - any hints for removing it?

Mike, is there a specific type/vendor of oil you would recommend?
Presumably if this is equivalent to the originally specified oil then it could be used in the gearbox too?

Two stroke oil is only to be used as a mix with the fuel.Some people have a favourite brand but there is not a lot to choose between any of them
Obtainable from m/cycle dealers,garden machinery shops etc etc.
Re the g/box use SAE 30 as per the book ,not so easy to come by these days but ask around some one will stock it.Vintage shows are a good source of stockist.
