Terry...You dont say if the engine fails to rev up when you are in both forward or reverse. If this is the case check your prop . I assume the engine is in a boat . It could be that your prop is fouled with weed or even fishing line or rope.

Terry, the coil getting hot is not a problem. Sounds like the throttle linkage may be sticking when you engage gear...have a good look at this and see that it is quite free . Do you understand how it works ,ie the throttle can be set to run and when you revert to neutral the engine just idles .....go into forward or astern and the engine resumes it's original setting.
The reason I mentioned fouling of the prop ,a friend here had the same problem that you describe and he found rope fouling the prop

Hello, I have a Stuart Turner P5 looks in very good condition, but I have been told to use it as an anchor, as they are notoriously prone to not starting when hot. Does anyone have any info regarding this, before I install it in my boat?

regards

Thanks for your advice Peter. I'm sure the throttle inside the carb is opening and closing fine. The throttle on this one is remote ie operates by cable and works freely - not a cable problem. Any other suggestions as the engine is fine except when in gear and under load. Thanks for your help. Do you think the carb is faulty?

Best wishes

Hello David
My Stuart Turner always starts when hot. It is certainly worth investigating as good engines. Don't use as an anchor!
