Has anyone got any info on the original exhaust and ignition of these engines?

As these engines were usually supplied as sets of unmachined castings, 'little details' such as ignition and exhaust were very much up to the individual builder. I have seen models with an insulated terminal (binding post) in the crankcase cover plate, I assume this to be attached to a simple wipe contact inside the case which would have been used with a battery and trembler coil.

Alternatively a magneto platform could be fitted to the four cast bosses below the cover plate, the magneto being driven by a follower crank.

I would be interested in any information about these early Stuart engines and their evolution into the later designs.

BTW. As this is not a marine engine (according to Fairways S-T did not enter the marine market 'till 1929), have you tried the uk.rec.engines.stationary newsgroup? There has been quite a bit of discussion re S-T engines there recently.

Hey there, just an update on how the engine is going, what i have of it has been cleaned and painted, sorry to say but not much info on the ignition and exhaust has come to light. If someone out there in cyber-land has any pictures of this model or the W4 engine either it would be appretiated if you posted them or emailed them to my at [email protected]
I willingly accept all stuart turner related pictures as i am trying to build a stuart turner archive, both physically and picturewise
